A private collection with a wide range of items put togetther in a formidable palace-like building. The green area around the building is also worth the trip.

I mean... we all see it right? Senhor Brennand was not very subtle.
Touring this museum can seem long and hard, but in the end you'll find satisfaction.

All over the world the best part of a city (at least if you are a tourist) is the historic center of it. This old town, originally founded by Dutch colonizers, contains most of the historic and government buildings in the city and the oldest synagogue in the Americas. The port, located in Recife Antigo, was once the most active in all of the Americas. Recife's reputation for safety is not one of the best, be careful and avoid some areas after the sunset.

For folks familiar with Gilberto Freyre and his contributions, this is a great place to go. The place was his home for several years and there you can see where he did his writings as well as the gardens that he cultivated. A small bookstore sells his books.

Madre Deus Church is an old church in Old Recife, the colonial part of the city, still conserved for tourism. It´s not very big like a Cathedral, but it´s simplicity makes it very attractive.

An old (three winged) prison, built in the mid 1850's, now an artisans craft market the cells have been turned into stalls offering souvenirs, crafts and jewellery, quite a nice setting for a market.

Our experience was enhanced by first visiting the next door Church of Sao Antonio. There, we got a personal tour from a guide with excellent English who then followed us next door to do the same at the Capela Dourada. Beautiful Baroque building with stunning gold, impressive tile work, and stark paintings (including the twice-defaced one of the Japanese Martyrs. See them both together and hope you find the guide! Outside is shabby with street denizens, but don't let that dissuade you
