From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted by the enthusiastic artist’s son. So proud of the works his father has done (and continues to do). We meandered around the studio stopping at various pieces on display, flickering through smaller prints showing life along the Melaka riversides. Venturing further inside we come across a colourful display of three dancers. It grabbed our attention - so much so, we couldn’t resist.

The son proudly showed off more private areas of the gallery and took us on a tour of the entire residence. Seeing original sketches locked away in humidity controlled cabinets - years of works that themselves are timeless and no doubt a proud history.

Meeting the artist Tham Siew Inn himself made our purchase that even more special. Him being able to talk his vision, and explaining the detail in our purchase immediately brought it to life.

Thoroughly recommend a visit - but watch out - wandering through this large gallery - you will no doubt be mesmerised and also walk away with a masterpiece too.

Great range of local handicrafts as well as Hin’s own very stylish prints. A must-visit place whenever we are in Melaka, and somewhere we are quite comfortable to take our guests.
Note that the address is now 105 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock - just across from Salud.

It’s good to be back in Melaka now that Covid restrictions between Singapore and Malaysia have been lifted. Much of Melaka remains unchanged from our last visit over 2 years ago, fortunately, although many businesses have yet fully reopen due to the lack of visitors.

Was great to visit Malaqa House Museum and see a carefully maintained and unrestored example of a long Peranakan style house commonly found adjacent to Jonker Street. Many of these once private houses for the very wealthy have been gentrified and turned into hotels and restaurants. Not a bad thing, but Malaqa House stands out as it retains so many of its original features in unrestored condition, allowing you to see it as the original architect intended. For sure, some of the paint is peeling and many tiles are heavily worn thanks to several decades of use, but that is the charm of the place. Even on what was a very hot day, the three air wells along the building’s length allowed a cooling breeze to flow through the property illustrating that the designers knew how to keep the occupants cool without aircon!

We were fortunate to spend some time with Grace Wong, the proprietor. She explained the buildings features, helping us understand how the expansive rooms would have originally been used, and also why this style of house was built long and narrow.

Definitely recommended if you have an interest in the historical architecture of Melaka.

I popped in to have a look initially to escape the heat, and received a lovely low pressure welcome and invitation to browse from Cliff at the front door. The store was described by an earlier reviewer as a Tardis - much bigger on the inside than the outside. That is the perfect description. The store goes back a long way, with a lovely internal courtyard, and huge stock to browse through.

The contents are a fascinating mix of old and reproduction pieces. Cliff is completely transparent about which are antiques, and which are good reproductions. I thoroughly appreciate this honesty (thank you Cliff!). There is an eclectic collection of paintings, some quite quirky in a traditional style but modern themes. And some lovely porcelain pieces in the historic Peranakan (Malacca Straits Chinese) style. I did not investigate these further as I am not a collector, but am sure that Cliff would have been a gold mine of information if I had wanted to know more.

I bought a lovely reproduction snuff bottle, framed in a minimalist cedar frame, and all carefully bubble-wrapped for transport. There is also a small collection of elegant jewelled fasteners (kerosang) for the traditional Peranakan lady’s top; in lovely bee, dragonfly, spider and the more traditional flower and leaf motifs.

Highly recommend a stop to browse and look for something to take home from Malacca. Or just for a very pleasant chat and respite from the heat of the day. Many thanks Cliff, it was lovely to meet you.

The exhibition was just three small rooms. The staff were friendly and were kind enough to help us take our photos. Don’t waste 22 MYR here.

Melaka is described as a heritage city. It has changed for the better since the last time I visited 7 years ago.
One of my first galleries to check out was Jehan Chan's. It had shifted to his son-in-law, David's gallery.
The gallery is a little nook of discovery. One can happily spend an hour browsing. David was there personally to take you around and put on a spotlight to highlight the colours of his artwork.
Unfortunately, I did not see any of Jehan Chan's artwork. When I enquired, I learnt that Jehan Chan had passed away in 2011 (RIP).
