We improvised a bit since my husband and I had come in on a red eye and were exhausted: we needed a low-key day and we’re planning to stay in Monteverde rather than returning back to San Jose. We went on backroads to avoid traffic and drove past smaller towns and hillsides as we asked him more about what it was like to live here, and learned more about Costa Rica culture. Our first stop was to Puntarenas to see the ocean and cool our feet in the water. He found us some coconuts and we had a refreshing drink before driving up to Monteverde. Here we had a wonderful leisurely meal at the Open Kitchen cafe and went to the beautiful and charming Butterfly refuge. Wanting to get back to the hotel for dinner, we made a last stop at the coffee shop at the Monteverde cloud forest preserve. We sat on the porch at the café and listened to and watched multiple hummingbirds feeding. So peaceful and thrilling for us. Bird sounds filled the air. Then back to our hotel. Lovely personalized day! Manuel is a genuine and generous person and we glad to have met him. - Jasmin JSaint Louis, MO5 contributionsWe had so much fun doing this! Andreas was our tour guide and he was awesome! He took his time to make sure we were comfortable and took us through the mountains then the beach. The ATV ride definitely takes some experience because you are going up and down mountains. But the views and waterfall are breathtaking and definitely worth it. My boyfriend and I were the only people on the tour, so we were able to enjoy ourselves a lot more and got to have one on one time with Andreas.
Pick-up was on time (actually early), which I appreciated! Our driver was very good. We were in the Santa Ana area, so it took about an hour and half to make it to the location but it was so worth it! Our driver also took us by the crocodile bridge, where I probably seen some of the biggest crocodiles I've ever seen.

The food and hotels were great. The travel experience was comfortable. - Gary DLoveland, CO35 contributionsMy wife and I did the Monteverde and Arenal volcano and hot springs tour from San Jose which were graciously donated by A&E to a benefit auction we attended. Our tour guide and driver were great! They knew all the best spots to stop for photos. We had nice tour companions each day. These tours are 14 hours long with a lot of driving, but we didn't feel rushed. Without an itinerary the first day was very long especially after having to ride along to drop off another group in Jaco then drive back to San Jose. We knew a little better what to expect the second tour and enjoyed it more. I would recommend doing one of the 3 day packages. - Lee JAustin, TX1 contributionWe were especially fortunate to be the only 2 travelers on this trip, but I think it would have been great even with more people. Our guide (Adrian sp?) was excellent and provided just enough information without talking the whole time. The timing was really great at the volcano because we got a crystal clear morning with great views of the crater and the whole volcano path down to the valley. It is COLD up there though (wear pants and pack a warm jacket). The Starbucks coffee farm was one of the best tourist experiences I've had - not commercialized and really informative and interesting. Because we were there during the harvest, we got to actually pick coffee beans and even taste the seed covering. The waterfall was beautiful and neat that you can walk behind it. - Luis A18 contributionsThe tour is a long day with 4 hours of driving from San Jose to Rio Celeste but definitely worth it. Our driver Johan and our tour guide Luis made the road trip very comfortable and fun. The breakfast and lunch were very good. The Rio Celeste trail could be challenging for some people that are not used to walk and climb stairs. - Vicky J10 contributionsWe had such a great time with our guide Manuel on our first day that we booked another day to go to Poas volcano and La Paz Waterfalls along with a few more customized stops. The roads can be very challenging and we felt very safe with Manuel as our driver. He is a fun and kind man and made our days just so perfect. On the first day when we went to Monteverde Cloud Forest,Manuel called ahead to book a certain tour guide who is a biologist as my 21 year old has a huge interest in bugs and other creatures. Because of that we saw things we never would have noticed, including a tarantula in his little den and a small pit viper wrapped up in the grass. Being able to stop whenever you wanted at little roadside places is really great too. We stopped for fresh coconut water and lychee as well as strawberries on the second trip. We highly recommend Manuel as the guide and Jose who helped us to design our days. - LaTanya NAlexandria, LA28 contributionsSuch a wonderful excursion. The shuttle was on time. We stayed at Airbnb and was only short walk to closest hotel on list. The shuttle ride to get to the adventure park too maybe 1.5hr. We we’re early so we stopped at a small store where we were able to take a short walk to the bridge and you could see many large crocodiles below. The scenery was gorgeous. We then traveled to the adventure park. We purchased the combo zip lining + ATV. We were split in groups of 4 for ATVs and had our own guide. If you chose ATVs, make sure u purchase face bandanna or bring your own. The trail is really dusty. There are lockers available to rent for personal items. It was a $10 (deposit) that will be returned at the end of the day. The guide instructs a brief safety tutorial and take u around test track to ensure you are comfortable with the ATV. You are lead down the trail single file. The trails include a lot of sharp turns, rocky terrain, water puddles, and small hills. You are literally riding through the jungle at one point. There is someone that rides ahead with professional camera to her all these amazing photos are you guys having a blast. You then park for a brisk 10 min walk to the waterfall. Apparently it was dry season when we went, but you can still see the waterfall. There a pool at the end of the waterfall that you have the option of jumping into. Omg! Definitely an experience. The guide instructs you in exactly where to step and how you should jump. Short ride back to front where you have fresh fruit and water waiting for you. The guide also carries water with him as well. A buffet style lunch was served. Food was really good.
Zip lining followed much. We were fitted with our equipment and placed in groups. We were driven to the first line in a tractor trailer. The guide provided clear and precise instructions mixed with a little humor to ensure everyone’s safety. There was a total of 10 lines. Instructions were given before each line. There a is rest stop 1/2 way where water is provided. Photo op on line 5 or 6 where you have to option to go upside down!!! The entire experience was absolutely amazing. It was my friend’s first time zip lining and riding and ATV and he really enjoyed himself. He could not stop thanking me for booking this excursion. Our pics between the two activities were purchased for $60 usd, totally worth it. They are emailed shortly after purchase. I would highly recommend this excursion. I would definitely go back. ATV AND ZIPLINES were great
When we booked the tour we booked the tour for a English speaking tour Guide. The person that picked us up spoke ZERO English and was 40mins late picking us up. Additional After the activity was over we didn’t know where our diver was and had to wait 40min again. The driving was rough and made me sick.
