- gl0baltr0tterShanghai, China1,111 contributionsThe site has many mining relics and some buildings from the literally gold era. It also has some nice hiking trails that are free to explore.Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Glenn O110 contributionsCame to this place by accident late afternoon midweek. No entry fee is required, but a donation is requested. This museum is a small gem of a place here in Grass Valley. The docents are enthusiastic and full of information. The larger displays such as the pelton wheel, and stamp mill actually work. It's very cool. There are plenty of dioramas packed with historical information of the gold mining days here in Nevada County. It takes 45 minutes to an hour to go thru this place. A creek runs by with picknik tables if you want to pack your lunch. This place has had an enormous amount of work and love invested in it. Highly recommended.Written 3 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Bart CFoster City, CA492 contributionsSmall but excellent gallery situated in a framing and art restoration workshop. They do extraordinary things with artistic framing! Nice people.Written 26 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- DrMarkESRochester, MN472 contributionsGrass Valley was the hub for the gold miners, for new schools, for the narrow gauge railway to the gold mines and more. This museum shows it all. From the founding of the region for the gold miners, to the establishment of churches, schools, medical offices, and a dentist...the history has ll been preserved.
On a warm day (which is was for us) the inside can be very hot but some spots inside have the fans blowing. A well-versed tour guide tells you everything in about 30 minutes and walks out through the whole museum. There are several steps up to the museum but inside it is all on one level. Down on ground level is a thrift store which helps to support the museum costs (as well as gladly received donations as you finish the tour.)
If you want to know more about the gold miners, the Chinese Camps (railroad workers), Nevada county and the surrounding area this museum is worth the time. It is close to downtown.
You will even learn the origin of the phrase, "Put a sock in it."!
Can be great for the whole family but with kids younger than 3rd grade you might ask the tour guide to just hit the highlights. For older folks, the time is enjoyable and very historic with maps of CA before it ever became a state.Written 3 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. They are very talented artists that do the work all by hand. All the art work here is very talented too I like how the different artists will choose different colors and shape and start drawing what they want and to paint it so everyone can see their talent through their arts and crafts projects that they have chosen for us all to see.Written 22 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - shannonaw20193 contributionsI always find something that perfect gift for that person that is hard to buy for. The sales people are friendly and knowledgeable about the artist that have made the projects.Written 7 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
