What travellers are saying
- Randy NRocklin, CA8 contributionsThe diggings tells the whole story of hydraulic mining for gold. The park has a lot of history, like the small town of North Bloomfield. Bloomfield displays old hydraulic mining equipment. You can see where miners just destroyed mountain sides. The exposure and colors of the diggings are beautiful. There are several ways to get there and all of the road cross the great Yuba River. Fun places to spend a day or two and take a look at how gold was washed out of the mountain sides. - Bob SSan Jose, CA29 contributionsWe happened to arrive on one of the days they had period actors acting as the original owners and the staff. I love wood and stone and all the stone was from the local hills that came about from mining. The inside was done in the most beautiful , clear heart redwood I have ever seen. Nice to be able to see the beauty that was produced by 100 yr old trees. Sad to see them cut down but in the old days they were not as aware as we are today regarding the loss of our ancient trees. Dont just stop at the house (which they call a cottage) there is lots to see on the estate including a 100 ft deep mine shaft , an active black smith shop and more.Written 9 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lana GAuburn11 contributionsDon't bypass this quaint museum. They are working hard to preserve local rail history. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. We were able to visit the restoration area and talk to volunteers. It was rainy the day we visited and they weren't running the railcars, but think that would be very enjoyable.Written 17 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - paw2641Bay Area, California51 contributionsAs you travel through the trees and cross over the creeks below you get a sense of Thoreau's words a walk in the words. Peaceful, serene and the smells of the trees bring you back to your senses and are able to relax in the environment. Well worth the adventure and hike.Written 5 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Bob SSan Jose, CA29 contributionsWe did the entire Independence trail east hike and it was very nice. It is flat enough for a wheel chair and easy enough for anyone to hike it. We saw lots of lovely flowers despite being a little late for the spring burst of flowers. At the end of the trail (2.2 miles) you have a grand view of the very blue Yuba River. I will go again and again.Written 9 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Channa BBenicia, CA2 contributionsThis was a wonderful experience. The garden is vivid and colorful, Ginny is quite enchanting. Her stories and whimsical characters came to life with each glance. I had to do the walk through again as I saw new things each time. It was a fun factory delite for my eyes and senses.Written 8 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - gsaxSan Rafael, CA31 contributionsThis "retired" firehouse makes a charming venue for a real look at some of the history of Nevada City starting with the native American Indians and the Chinese who came to mine gold as well as the original pioneers and early residents of the city. Definitely worth a visit. Very informative "docents." No entrance fee just a contribution. - Ruben C70 contributionsAs with most parks, the visit is about the attraction and not so much about the gift shop, or in this case the office. Yes, folks seem a little dis-spirited in the office. One expects enthusiasm and one might see it in these employees when it is time to clock out. The real thrill is being able to drive all over on windy two lane roads with very little traffic. There are trail heads everywhere. It's a great place to explore with plenty of wild life. Just be careful with all those cute little deer on the side of the road so as not to have to wear them home.Written 19 December 2014This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
