- joyous-traveler2015Navarre, FL122 contributionsAfter visiting the St. Marks Lighthouse, we asked the docent to recommend a walk where we might see alligators. Kim was great, she gave us a map, circled her recommendation & off we went. We ended up seeing snowy egrets, a great blue heron, turtles sunning themselves and 6 alligators plus huge flocks of other birds which we have no idea what they were. This refuge is huge! it's quite a drive south of Tallahassee but well worth the drive and time. The day we went was sunny and delightful.Written 13 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Elin C4 contributionsWe arrived late in the day so we only saw the visitor’s centre, but Will was so helpful, and the exhibition space was really interesting! We spoke to David the historian too and learnt so much - will absolutely be coming back for a proper visit when we’re next in town and have more time. Thank you so much!Written 29 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- BobbyD1927Horseheads, NY74 contributionsExcellent history museum, and the best part is that it's free. Young and old will enjoy the artifacts and stories told in this museum. Great for history buffs and history novices alike. if you're a Floridian, this is a must. If you're not a Floridian, then you'll still enjoy this one. The museum traces Florida's roots as a Spanish colony/British colony/US territory and then US state. Very informative. You can spend hours here--and we did.Written 29 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- FancyFree55Florida7,639 contributionsTo celebrate the 40-year anniversary of our family's move to Florida, my daughter and I decided it was high time we drove a few hours west to visit our state capitol. We allowed ourselves one afternoon to explore, which isn't nearly enough time. We wondered if parking might be problematic downtown, but we found a metered parking lot only two blocks walking distance from the entrance. The meters still accept coins (and new-fangled payment via phone app), and we paid less than five dollars for three hours.
I never knew that our current capitol and the historic capitol buildings are literally next door to each other. The circumstances that led to this unique arrangement are quite interesting, and ours is the only state in the country which boasts this phenomenon.
Admission is free, and we were treated by the receptionist to an intriguing summary regarding the historic capitol building's many architectural revisions since it was first constructed in the mid-1800s. I love the red and white striped awnings adorning the first capitol building - dozens of them, on every last window - initially added to provide shade and some relief from the intense summer heat before the invention of air conditioning. The awnings reminded me of peppermint hard candies. The story of the leaky stained glass dome ceiling was also interesting.
We were keenly interested in the various state flags and mottos on display that came and went throughout the state's history. I was also fascinated by the first and only mutoscope I've ever laid eyes on, where we watched a newsreel depiction of Governor Sidney Catts's 1917 inauguration.
As a long-time resident, I remember some of the history that's on display here, especially the forever-controversial election whereby Dubya secured the United States presidency courtesy of his brother, the Florida governor.
A few years before my arrival in Florida, another controversy raged here about whether to preserve the historic capitol building or demolish it and build a new one in its place. Evidence of the battle, pro and con, is a collection of angry letters written by Floridians on both sides of the fence.
I could write a book about our visit, but go see for yourself. And allow at least a full day to explore.Written 19 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - joyous-traveler2015Navarre, FL122 contributionsThe only thing that would have made the visit to the lighthouse better is if we could have climbed to the top. Lovely lighthouse and wonderful docents who answered all our questions and know so much about the history of this stuction. If you go to this lighthouse make sure you plan some time to take a walk or two to see all the wonderful wildlife.Written 13 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - sk_mcintyreFernandina Beach, FL132 contributionsThis is a charming park where you can ride your bike, walk or just sit on a bench and have lunch or enjoy the pond and scenery. It is serene and has a lot of history which is explained on the various boards around the park. You can stop at the Edison Restaurant for some wonderful refreshments and lunch and take in the peaceful surroundings. Highly recommend this park.Written 15 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- RJBandRDBCamdenton, MO354 contributionsThe receptionist was so friendly, welcoming and accommodating giving us a brief overview and helpful advice, + "I spy" sheet for the kiddoes' (which as a big kid I enjoyed looking for the items. I never did find the clue about handkerchiefs.) Sadly we could not enter the new capitol buildings, but for sure enjoyed looking over the old. There is so much history, films to watch and information. Very educational and interesting for those who enjoy history and being informed.Written 7 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
