- tdsuperstarToronto, Canada18,565 contributionsThere’s been so much said about The Butchart Gardens, so it’s difficult to add to the discourse on the most popular thing to do on Vancouver Island. That said, the important things for me to take out of the day, is that you really should give the Gardens a solid three hours. You can easily do more. With the unusually cold winter, the blooms were not as present this week when I went. Even still, I enjoyed the whole three plus hours. Taking public transit there from downtown is easy, so I definitely recommend that if you are not driving. My favourite garden was the Japanese Garden followed closely by the Sunken Garden. I know I can’t wait to visit again, hopefully sooner than later!!Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. To understand the importance of Vancouver Island to the reemergence of life in the Northern Hemisphere after the Ice Age, it really shows the unique gift that lies in this region. The displays are kept up well and dynamic. The photography exhibit on right now is wonderful. The IMAX film “Everest” was excellent and inspiring, though not really for youngsters (mine is almost 8), despite being rated “G”. I would say seeing the Royal BC is of great importance to getting the Victoria, but also the Vancouver Island experience!!Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gardiner WVancouver, Canada430 contributionsAn 1890's full on Victorian mansion. Built by a Scottish Canadian industrialist who sadly never survived long enough to move in. But his wife and gaggles of daughters did.beautiful woodwork and lots of stain glass. Lovely wooden floors and furnished in the style of the period. Lots of stairs so those with mobility problems should note. Castle underwent several transformations over the years and each is recorded in the rooms and written tablets. A bit dark in some of the rooms (curtains closed to prevent fading I guess) but does make it difficult to read some of the info posts (I suggested a small hotel bed lamp be installed to make it easier. Allow at least an hour for the tour. And look on google for more info on the builder (one Mr Dunsmuir)Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ah_travelgirlSan Diego, CA144 contributionsSmall, but cute area to walk around and check out the docks. There are colorful, floating eateries and private homes. You can catch a water taxi and other tours are offered here too.Written 15 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - cymryMontreal202 contributionsI hesitated over whether to visit but am very glad I did! This place is a little ridiculous, very whimsical, and overall a great experience! There are approx. 85 different dioramas and models, ranging from the space age (the first room, which made me think of a cheap sci-fi show), to war-times (the standard Civil War, etc. dioramas but some truly stunning WWII recreations of bombed-out cities), the history of Canada, fairy-tale land, and everything in between. The dioramas were done by various people so range in scale and style, and were overall just really interesting. The entire place is set up with a carnival-type feel, which suits the atmosphere perfectly.Written 1 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Rainee ESeattle, WA53 contributionsReally enjoyed our stay that the Empress. Spacious and clean room with a view of the Parliament. The hotel Christmas decorations were lovely and made for a festive feel. Be sure to stop at the Empress bar to enjoy the famous Empress Gin or a non-alcoholic beverage.Written 1 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - David F18 contributionsThe walk (self guided) through the gardens is wonderful and full of beautiful plants of different sizes and shapes, all compressed into one acre in a residential area. The history is better laid out in the web site, but both the husband and wife were interned during WWII in quite different places and different circumstances. They had known each other before the war. They met again after thinking the other had died, and married and spent their time building their garden and their house. The house is quite revolutionary for the interior design at the time (see the dining room pictures) and being in the house is a mixture of pure domestic matters (period tiling in the bathroom), modern for the time design elements (indirect lighting in the dining room) and china from that era when they lived there. Our timing was at the end of the afternoon and we missed the opportunity to have tea and a snack there, but it's clear it would have been a lot of fun. Our snack was at the nearby DemiTasse, but that's another review.Written 7 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RoBe48 contributionsIn a city known for its gardens, the Government House Gardens remain basically unknown. Maintained by volunteers, these gardens are lovely, diverse, and inspiring. A guided tour is worth the expense, and I can recommend Arthur and Leslie as guides with great knowledge and a passion for the gardens.Written 24 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
