What travellers are saying
- Jennifer B18 contributionsBe Patient and Be Prepared! Note best times to get into the park because parking is limited.
We just kept driving through the line at the gate and finally got a turn to go in.
Great trails that are easy to walk, beautiful views, and informative. Climb to the top of the 14 story ladders for the best views. Disappointing that one area was closed due to vandalism, and a little trash in off trail places so not possible to pick up.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The museum is a great overview of the Los Alamos National Laboraty.Written 20 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PossumCathAuckland, New Zealand31 contributionsOur visit to the museum and the surrounding houses used by scientists in the Trinity Project, was compelling. The duality of the moral dilemma scientists - including Oppenheimer - faced is there in black and white. Glimpses of it are evocatively snatched in each house: women who looked through the back door and saw the mushroom cloud rise, and who turned away to the calm kitchens of their abodes. Go to it! It's hard to forget once seen and experienced.Written 3 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Christina BLouisiana2,712 contributionsWe are staying in White Rock and it was very close to us. Worth the side trip if you are in the area. Great look out views. It you go just a little off the path on the left (going to platform) is a waterfall down in the canyon. I would NOT recommend any small or young kids walking over there as it’s a sheer drop off with no rails. Platform has rails. Very short walk to lookout area.Written 2 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Claudia10229Dallas, TX430 contributionsCheck NPS website for details, but Tsankawi will be closed.
Los Alamos, NM – Bandelier National Monument will temporarily close its Tsankawi Unit in mid-March 2023 due to extensive construction work. It is expected to reopen in late-October 2023. The final closure date will be posted on the park’s website once the construction schedule is finalized.
As part of the larger interagency project to improve traffic flow and safety at the junction of New Mexico State Road 4 and East Jemez Road outside of White Rock, Bandelier will construct a new parking area and access road that will align with the traffic light at the intersection. “This project will address safety concerns for visitors accessing the Tsankawi Unit,” said Superintendent Patrick Suddath, “When the project is complete, visitors will no longer have to park along the highway shoulder or cross moving traffic when entering or exiting the site.”
Construction activities will impact all existing parking for Tsankawi. There will be no safe parking or access points for the visiting public as a result. “We will use the opportunity of this closure to re-route the Tsankawi Loop Trail around the ancestral pueblo site, and to mitigate the many social trails and other impacts to the area that have been years in the making,” said Superintendent Suddath. “This site is very important to our tribal partners, and so it is vital that we fully honor our commitment to address impacts to the site during this time.”
Entering Tsankawi by any means will be prohibited during this closure, except for personnel performing official duties related to the various construction projects. Violators of the closure will be subject to citation or arrest. The site will remain closed until all construction projects are completed or until visitors are able to safely access and travel within the area while construction and trail work continues.Written 20 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We dropped in to look at the bird feeder and we’re thrilled to see a couple of pigmy nuthatches. Then to find the place open, inside were interactive learning features for kids, reptiles (corn snake, milk snake, hog nose snake, skink and a salamander) which thrilled the kids. An observation deck, enclosed, looked out over a certified National wildlife habitat overlooking the canyon. We watched chipmunks, squirrel, acorn woodpecker, goldfinch, purple finch, white breasted and Pygmy nuthatches, black chinned and rufous hummers as they fed and watered themselves without bothering with us. Highly recommend this place!Written 1 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- montanapescadoAlbuquerque, NM1,316 contributionsIt's worth the detour here to get out of the car and do some exploring on foot. There are easy trails in the canyon or difficult trails ascending the canyon walls. Plenty of great photo ops no matter which options you choose.Written 20 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - dorsalmoFlorissant, MO1,121 contributionsThe rangers at the visitor center were very helpful and knowledgeable. We walked down Bathtub Row and saw the various buildings, including the museum, lodge, and one of the houses. The docent in the house that's open was a wealth of knowledge too. Since we had recently seen the movie, we especially enjoyed seeing the actual sites.Written 21 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NostalgiyeahBothell, WA1,898 contributionsThe overlook is on NM-502, just a few miles east of Los Alamos. Since it is a pull-off on the highway, this doesn't require taking any detours and you can judge for yourself if you want to stop here for five minutes or thirty. It is easier to access driving westward on NM-502, since it is on that side of the road, and just around a curve in the road making it a tad harder to turn your car left, if driving eastward from Los Alamos. Easy accessibility aside, there are some wonderful views of New Mexico landscape, with blue skies strumming as a perfect backdrop. The panoramic view is breathtaking, the valley will make for some unforgettable sunset photos if you are there in time for the setting sun. Even otherwise, the valley is a very peaceful site to look at and enjoy for at least a few minutes, before heading on out to your destination.Written 15 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
