It's close to several subway stops, the Brooklyn bridge and Chinatown. - Thomas VOakland, CA13,455 contributionsI wandered around the Oculus completely for the first time. The area around it is jsut about complete, so the design concept is more obvious and enjoyable. It's a very practical hub where lots of subway lines and the PATH come together, along with a lot of shopping and eating, all indoors. - RumplesTucson, AZ11,172 contributionsThis abstract sculpture on Foley Square immediately caught my attention when I came to look at the government buildings there. The black granite vertical work forms the center piece of a fountain, rising 50 feet into the air. It was inspired by the carved antelope headdresses of the Barmana people in the West African county of Mali. A horizontal boat-like feature that supports the piece alludes to the overseas voyage of enslaved Africans.
When I visited in early morning on a holiday weekend, only one person was near the fountain. He sat, reading a book. The lack of a crowd gave me the opportunity to quietly reflect on sculptor Lorenzo Pace's symbol of freedom and endurance.
Pace created the work in 2000. Directly across the street was a nice park on a triangle lot with a great building. - crawford gAberdeen, UK1,586 contributionsBeing a Scot, we had to go to St. Andrew's Church (the patron saint of Scotland) and were really glad we did. The building is quite wonderful inside, with very beautiful preservation of original features. The Sunday service was interesting, with a small community who made all feel inclusive.
