I met up with a few of my coworkers to explore NY outside of Times Square. The High Line allows pedestrians a way to view the city without dealing with vehicle traffic. There are several stairways to get back to street level if you find a specific area along it you want to explore. Great for walking and looking at art and the architecture of the city.

There is just something about the West Village that brings me back in every trip to the city. A perfect escape from the madness of midtown, the West Village and its cool tree lined streets are the perfect place for a bit of respite from the crowds.

The West Village has some great movie and TV sights such as the Friends building on Bedford St. couple that with some of the best eateries in the city, I’d definitely recommend a good walk through the area!

We had the opportunity to talk directly to the Workshops' founder, Gary Suson. At the time, we were in New York City for a 5 day trip and we had seen already a lot of the major sites. We had planned a special day for 9/11. We didn’t know was that his Workshop was closed Sunday-Tuesday, and we expected we would have to miss it. Instead, he returned our call and invited us to come over and set up a personalized tour with one other family. We jumped at the chance.

I did voice my concerns about the content for our kids, who are 4, 6 and 10 yrs old. Gary reassured us that no jarring audio or graphic images would be presented that might upset them. His content primarily chronicled the experiences, artifacts and memories of the rescue teams who searched for months (through all kind of conditions) for survivors or their remains. It was so unique as Gary told his story of being there, taking photographs and working alongside so many brave people.

The kids were very attentive in good part because there are so many ways to learn – an audiovisual introduction, an interpersonal conversation and a kinesthetic opportunity. That’s right – Mr. Suson allows you to touch or hold several artifacts, including rare window glass or metal from the building’s support beams. Frankly, you won’t have that opportunity at the 9/11 exhibit! He graciously answered questions and gave us plenty of time to have a meaningful and personal experience amongst his collection. And he’s a darn good photographer, too.

If you into typical museums with art paintings, this may not be for you. Although this museum has paintings, many are abstact, risque for the times (and even now) and lots of pieces that may be having you scratching your head.

However, these museums are needed to keep the vibrancy. An artistic person's museum. For me I found some of the pieces interesting but many confusing. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it but it definitely was out of my comfort zone. It was still a fun afternoon and they have some really great outdoor spaces where you can relax and soak in the atmosphere.

Not really for children as some of the art pieces are pretty graphic and thought provoking

With us visiting within what we’ve been told is the “hottest heatwave in NYC since 2013” whilst out and about any opportunity to find air conditioning or a breeze has certainly been an option we’ve taken.

Having strolled a fair way along The High Line we spotted Hudson River Park and decided to drop down and stroll along the river for the views and the breeze.

The park itself is lovely with a nice green feeling to it, the breeze off of the Hudson taking some of the heat out of the sun and making things that much more bearable.

With the “Little Island” in the area we also popped over to have a look. Certainly a visit we would make again in the future.

You can stand on the street corner and get the same shot of the apartment building in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. as the opening scene!

One of the newest NPS sites. While the original Stonewall inn is private, this national monument is located right across. It's small with just a few displays, but interesting and informative.

Nice, comfortable, great place to catch a show on a quiet, charming street in the West Village. Every seat is a good one in this intimate theatre space.

This is a really nice little community green space - but it's not large or distinct. My point being that it's a beautiful and worthwhile space - but for the more immediate community.

I have been coming here for almost 20 years since I came out at 13. Durig my teenage years there was alot of fun and voguing on the pier. I still have fun, dance , bring my music and there are still many gays that frequent although "karens" pushing their strollers will stare, we still run the pier, wear our thongs and speeds and have a Kiki in warmer weather... Can't wait for spring 2021. Bring your rainbow flag, blanket and music here to have a day of fun in the village!!! It's open till 1am.
WARNING, be discreet about drinking or smoking as the parks police are always watching and happy to fine people.
