Beautiful hike. Not too far from Waikiki, all fitness levels and a pretty waterfall at the end. Other trails stem off of this trail if you are up for extending your time out. Bring bug spray and water and make sure you are in proper footwear. There are nice rock steps but, some uneven ground. It is in the mountainside and trees so it can get wet. Bring a poncho if that is something that concerns you.

Excellent place to learn more about their culture and just how much of their heritage is missing. What I noticed the most is just much the early settlers of these lands resemble Native Indians, Indians and Africans. From their facial features, to heights, builds let alone the clothes and dance routines.

Now I know more about Captain Cooke and the Dole empire.

Interesting museum with immersive exhibits and artifacts. Recommend popping in and walking through Fort Derussy and it's very well maintained. Fairly accessible with seating areas and volunteers are friendly and welcoming. Self-guided and free admission. The gift shop was very well stocked.

Parking validation available, parking lot very close to museum across the street. We were recommended this museum after visiting the Tropic Lighting Museum on Schofield Barracks.

    Nature Vibe

It was an impeccably wonderful stay at the heart of Hawaii.

I felt like I was pampered and relaxed.

I have only a few hiccup on the overall stay!

My visit started with a negative, the car park is not connected to the museum. I am a solo wheelchair user, and had to wheel myself up the car park (which is on an incline) to pay, then along an uneven footpath, across two roads, and then up another footpath as the disabled entrance is at the side of the building. Because of where the car park is, I assumed that the building next to it was the museum, it wasn’t, it is the museum of art college! Thankfully, a really pleasant woman, a lecturer I assume, was quite happy to push me to where I needed to be, all the way, what a lovely, lovely lady. She then made sure I knew which way I needed to go to get back to my car. It is for this reason that I have given this review four stars, the rest of my experience was positive, a vet interesting museum, AND wheelchair friendly.

The best view of Honolulu from Diamond Head in the east to past the airport to the west. It is about a 15-20 minute drive from Waikiki. We went there after hiking up to Manoa Falls.

Having been to Honolulu a number of times, we looked for something to do that we haven't done before and the Lyon Arboretum was it. Very scenic with many lovely plants.
While you can do this on your own, a guided tour will add to your experience. There is a lot of walking and on uneven paths, so if you have mobility problems you might want to rethink coming here as the pathways are not wheelchair friendly. Do wear good walking shoes, not sandals.

Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Park is where you find Round Top Drive that takes you up to the Tantalus Lookout. Spectacular panoramic views on the entirety of Honolulu stretching from Diamond Head and across the city. Try to go on a nice day when the sun is shining and there are blue skies. The drive up takes about 15-20 minutes. I went around 11am on a Sunday morning and had no problems finding a parking spot. Hardly any others there at that time. Apparently, this is a favorite spot for car break ins so don't leave valuables visible, but I had no issues. There are also many nice hiking trails in the area including the hike to Manoa Falls and the Makiki Valley Trail

Even though the place was closed on the day we arrived, the Grounds facilitator was fantastic to talk with. Including his beautiful dogs. So lovely. He told us a little about the history and some exploring suggestions around. He was a retired Honolulu cop and was a gem. Thank you for the suggestions. It was amazing!

My name is Ofcr, Dana Fatu I have been the Honolulu Police museum manager/storyteller since 2015. I want to thank TripAdvisor for being a fair review board for me and the museum. I hope HPD continues the great five star ratings that me and mentor Eddie Croom have earned for the HPD museum since 2015.

I will be retiring and leaving the museum April 1, 2024. Best wishes For the history of Honolulu Police Museum and its continuation of great bookkeeping, maintenance and visitors still have the “Awe” factor…

Since 2015, we were able to create a barcoding system for close to 10k unique pieces of HPD artifacts, documents, archives of our police history.

I was the only officer in hpd history to generate and be awarded a $51k dept of justice grant. through the grant I coded 11 Samsung devices and set up in 11 different languages and now QR Codes throughout museum for our non-speaking visitors from across the world. Hopefully, the rigorous cleaning daily refreshing of the museum, to keep museum new. I pray the next successor picks up where we left to continue this magical time capsules museum, using 21st century technology. Crossing our fingers the $41k Fallen Officer Display will be set up in March or April of 2024 since I fought for it for almost 2 years.

Just last year in 2023, close to 1,800 visitors walked through the museum doors,

So, God what’s next for this soon to be retired police officer?…Mahalo and Alooooooha Officer Legaee Fatu jr “Dana” signing off

This is an interesting place, certainly worth the visit. The biggest downfall is that the identification of the many trees could, and should be greatly improved. The complementary folder available at the beginning of the tour suggests that you will be able to identify the many interesting trees. Unfortunately, as you walk around it turns out to be a hip hazard experience. Some trees are well identified, others are not. Also, the signs identifying the trees, very, making recognition challenging. Too bad, there are so many interesting trees and the educational experience would be greatly enhanced by ensuring better identification and marking of the trees in a consistent manner.

I discovered the Mission Houses while walking to the Iolani Palace for a tour there, so these two are very close and you could do them in one day if you plan ahead. The tour guide was super knowledgeable and had answers to all of our questions about what we were seeing or what she was telling us. We were a small group of 5, which was a good size for maneuvering the smaller spaces and visiting the rooms.

This tour added another layer to the history and my understanding of Hawaii. I especially enjoyed learning how the written Hawaiian language came about.

All Trails says it’s illegal, but there are so many people still doing it. We pulled into the parking area and found a spot. Crowded, but not full.

The trail is easy to follow from AllTrails. If you’re unsure which way to go, ask someone coming the other way.

We had rain and no rain coats, so we were chilly when we got to the falls and didn’t swim, but there is plenty of water to swim in. We didn’t stay long because it was later in the day, which put the sun partially on the falls.

I would recommend this hike, but not if you are alone. Make sure there are others already in the trail.

We debated back and forth on if we wanted to do this hike; so glad we decided to go! Yes, even with sunny Waikiki, this rain forest will be misty and showery. We went prepared: umbrellas, dark colored good walking shoes (do not wear anything white or nice). Your shoes will get dirty. Even with rocks on the trail, our shoes got a little bit dirty. Nothing a quick clean up didn't fix. No big deal.

The trail is so well maintained. It is a trail to waterfalls, be realistic people!! Some areas will be steep and steps required. But as far as waterfalls trails go, we thought this one was EASY!

It just amazes us how Jurassic Park this "feels". Just lovely. We spent about 2 hours or so enjoying this area. At the end, we were rewarded by nice flowing 150 feet drop Manoa Falls. She sure is lovely.

They put "do not go beyond" signs at the end of the trail, but plenty of people scramble to the water's edge. We went earlier in the morning, when we finished, definitely more people.

There is a nice clean up area, bathrooms, snack bar, etc. Easy to get Uber rideshares to and from. Highly recommend the hike.

This hike isn’t for the faint of heart! Lol it’s very challenging and sometimes dangerous but worth it in the end when you get to the waterfalls and the views. Definitely worth it. 👍🏼
