- Rowan HCairns, Australia1,355 contributionsThis is a really enjoyable FREE walk that is probably the top thing to do in Mazunte.
Here are my thoughts based on our recent experience.
* Although popular at sunset this is also nice to do in the morning, particularly when the weather is clear. It does get quite crowded at sunset.
* It can be done either as a in-out track or a circuit. I would recommend the later. Just before the large entrance sign you will note a smaller sign on your right labelled ‘Sendero Coral De Piedra Ponite) - this is the return point for the circuit. I would start by veering left. Once you get to the most southern headland you will need to cross a small beach to a adjacent set of stairs. From here the path gets a little overgrown but is still obvious and can be followed back to that entrance sign that was visible on the right.
* A highlight of going in the day is watching the locals (successfully) fish for longtom off the rocks.
* I’d wear hiking shoes (Or similar) as it can be uneven in places.
* Sunscreen, hat and water would obviously be helpful if going during the day.
* You can walk here from anywhere in Mazunte and probably San Augustin (no need to taxi)
* There are no bathroom facilities in the area.
Overall definitely worth doing if in the area.Written 26 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We walked to the dock and boarded a boat tour on the lagoon followed by a stop on the small island to see the wildlife sanctuary. We saw several baby crocodiles, sea turtles, different types of birds, white tailed deer, and a sleepy spider monkey on the visit. Overall, the visit was interesting and I would rate as good, but not necessarily an attraction to visit, but just something to do. I was lucky that my tour guide/driver was bilingual, as he interpreted what the Laguna Ventanilla staff was saying about the animals.Written 18 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Rowan HCairns, Australia1,355 contributionsAlthough still recovering from the recent cyclone which battered the oaxacan coast a month ago Mazunte still maintains its charms of yesteryear with a friendly and relaxed vibe. We spent a couple of days just chilling on the umbrella covered beach chairs at Jahil, a great restaurant located on the beach watching people try to swim.
On the negative side here the surf is quite rough. The waves are the traditional ‘dumper’ waves which form and break close to the shore. This means it is neither appropriate for surfing nor swimming. There is an area on the western side the was used as a swimming area but it was only marginally safer.
If you want to go swimming I would suggest getting accomodation with a pool.
I was surprised to hear that this is generally regarded as the best swimming beach on the oaxacan coastline.Written 26 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were actually impressed with how well it is cared for with limited resourses. We learned a lot about the the natural habitat and the conservation challenges in this area.Written 2 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - susanlynnk2017Nanaimo, Canada168 contributionsAmazing experience. To be a little part in turtle conservation was a great experience. The beach goes for miles, the circle of life you get to experience is worth it.Written 11 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - b2runHuatulco, Mexico277 contributionsThere are few people at this beach. It is fairly long with large waves and a strong tow so it good for swimming . There are no shade trees but it is a beautiful spot.Written 25 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jonSan Marcos, TX1 contributionI met Jo Jo at the glorious pool at Zazil. We sat an talked for a little, and she explained Agua Healing and the process. Then we entered the water. She attached two floats to my legs which made me buoyant and I was floating gently on my back.....I felt relaxed and safe and closed my eyes....For the next hour Jo Jo moved me around in the water gently but purposefully, accompanied at times by her
humming voice. I had the experience of letting go completely, feeling like I was in the womb at times,
at others, in a dream. It was one of the most unique and deep experiences I have ever had. It has stayed with me ever since.

The place is off main road opposite side of ocean on a dirt road. I really enjoyed my sessions there. The sessions usually last about 1:40 minutes. Suggested donation of 50 pesos or more.Written 8 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Lane6 contributionsAwesome learning experience! My friend and I were visiting Mazunte but unsure of our travel dates. Instituto Iguana was able to get us in for a week of lessons at the last minute. We were so grateful for the flexibility of the office staff and instructor! The facilities of the school were beautiful, with an open air classroom! And we really enjoyed the walk up from town. Lixeta, our instructor, was AMAZING! From her we learned not just Spanish but Mexican history and culture that was pertinent and so intriguing. She was very kind, patient and able to work well with my friend and I despite are varying levels of Spanish. Lixeta is a super star and I would highly recommend her and the school to anyone passing through or looking for a destination Spanish learning experience.Written 2 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
