What travellers are saying
- Heli PHelsinki, Finland6,360 contributionsEvery Sunday from 11 o'clock the old bus depot near Komtar hosts a craft and food market popular with tourists and locals. Many are selling selfmade artefacts, jewellery, candles, paintings and then there is the guy with a collection of incredible live insects hiding among leafs in terrariums. A large selection of Asian dishes is cooked on the premises by eager home chefs.Written 17 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - James Ma1 contributionI contacted David for his photo printing services, which I am very satisfied with the photos I got, he is very knowledgeable in the field of photography, a direct result of working for Reuters almost 30 years as photographer. I highly recommend if you want to print BIG.
David’s gallery is a must visit place, by appointment only. He has amazing photos about Malaysia, he works closely with Penang tourism to promote Penang/Malaysia. Kudos to his efforts. Being a Malaysian himself, he is very friendly and helpful to people like me, visiting Penang.Written 26 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The collection of cloisonnee clocks is impressing like the art objects carved from bone, which animal not specified. Bigger items like wood and bronze statues have a layer of dust over them. The building is a good representative of late 20th century modernism.Written 18 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Heli PHelsinki, Finland6,360 contributionsThe Penang based newspaper Star used to be edited and printed in this building, which now has still their advertising office for easy access, the main business is at Bayan Lepas. The space is open to enter and have a brief, but interesting look at the island's colourfull history. Search for the picture of Jimmy Choo, he is a Penangite too. There are books and souvenirs on sale and a free copy of Penang monthly to pick up. It has well written articles about the past glory and modern day life, sponsored by the think tank Penang Institute.Written 12 February 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GDay1044Durban, South Africa1,166 contributionsWe were staying at the hotel and the receptionist suggested we had a look here - the history of the hotel going back to its founding and the influence it had on George Town and visa versa is detailed with posters and photos together with some exhibits - obviously the Hotel is proud of this associated and are to be commended for putting aside the space to mount this exhibition.Written 11 June 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JonOng1997Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia5 contributionsOne of the best and oldest art galleries in Malaysia, with a collection beyond compare of Malaysian old masters with excellent provenance. Quite possibly the most prolific in terms of publications, and their works are some of the most informative and well researched that I have come across.
Purchased my first art pieces from them, and have had many enjoyable trips since - there is always more to learn and stories to share. Ee Lene (the gallerist) is a true expert and enthusiast, having grown up being surrounded by art since young, and is continuing her family's legacy in art.Written 13 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AikibenKuala Lumpur, Malaysia62 contributionsLocated about 100m from the main gate you will find this captivating shop amidst these houses on stilts in the sea.
Unlike many other Asian places where the shop mainly retails art this is the workshop of Mr Amila who hails from Sri Lanka and is a naturalized Malaysian
You can find him mostly from noon onwards making his masterpieces of abstract art of life , human and nature
With his extensive experience in living life and practicing Buddhist meditation you can almost feel the intensity and yet the calmness in his work
Do find some time to chat with him as he can bring you towards a journey of his art pieces
See how the coexistence of nature, buddhism , meditation and art has created a blend of interdependence in his artworkWritten 5 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
