My husband really wanted to visit various parts of Sicily & Italy, so the cruise was a great way of getting a “taster” of each. When I booked the trip, I went for an inside cabin, as it wasn’t really about the cruise experience, it was just a way of getting to these countries, however I did watch You Tube videos to see what the room would be like and I was happy with my choice. Unfortunately though, when we got to our allocated cabin, it was nothing like what the videos had shown. It was the very last one at the rear of deck 4 and was an interconnecting room, possibly for a family (door locked obviously). Our cabin had bunks in for children and this meant our head room was minimal. We had to stoop down to get into our bed and take care when getting up. Additionally, because of its location, when the engines started, the noise was ridiculous and our entire cabin rattled! So I just wanted to say avoid room 4186 at all costs, if you are given the chance to choose your cabin! There were many positives though; the staff were amazing, the food was exceptional and the trips well organised, so all in all we had a wonderful time.

As first time cruisers my wife and were unsure of what to expect. We need not have worried. The real star of the cruise is not the ship itself, it is the crew. From the lovely people that take care of your cabin, Hedi, Roland and Anna take a bow you wonderful people to the guys keeping the ship spick and span on the night shift, I know because I walked the decks at all hours and the effort expended on keeping everything.... ship shape is extraordinary. Of the ship I will say she is a beautiful vessel, showing her age in places but still very beautiful. We boarded the ship for a seven night cruise in Barbados travelling between US and British virgin islands Puerto Rico, St Croix, St Thomas, Dominica and St Vincent. Special mention must go to Magen's Bay on St Thomas. Anyway I digress. We booked a junior suite, a bit more expensive but worth it. It provides you with sun loungers and privacy. I see some recommendations on youtube saying you don't need a balcony but we found that to be misleading. Although the air temperature was a comfortable 30 odd degrees, in the midday sun the heat was almost unbearable but the shelter provided by a balcony was bliss and it also meant not having to secure sun loungers on deck. The junior suite cabin itself was spacious, plenty of wardrobe space, and above all kept spotless by the cabin staff. Ten out of ten. My wife is a chef so when we holiday the food can often be make or break. The standard of food aboard Discovery I am relieved to say is at worst good, at best, superb. Our favourite was Gallery 47, Olivan and Honey, thank you. Having said that the Kora La was excellent and the staff of whose names I am ashamed to say have slipped my mind were just superb. We found the Surf and Turf to be a little too busy and the staff under a little too much pressure for it to be as much as a satisfying experience as Kora but the food was very good, I didn't know you could do that with a Cauliflower! Breakfast and sometimes lunch were taken in Islands, a buffet service which was as are most buffets goes a bit hit and miss, made all the more awkward by me being veggie. But by and large if I had no where else on the ship to eat then Islands would have been more than acceptable nine times out of ten. The Glasshouse is also worth a visit for Lunch. Vitorio was always very cheery and pointed out to me I was always ordering the least expensive beers even although we booked the premium package. On the subject of premium package, if you're quite happy with the straight forward wines and spirits, then the ordinary package is fine. However if you are a whisky drinker or like the more exotic cocktails, premium is for you. It is (only) £70 per person and as far as my wife and I are concerned absolutely worth it. I can't go into much detail about the night life on board, my wife and I are early risers and after a day of excursions then dinner at night we were usually all in around nine!!!! But we were reliably informed that a good time was had by all into the wee small hours. Which in general meant I slept for two or three hours and then could be seen at any time walking the decks. Which in truth fascinated me, the constellation of Orion looks significantly different the further south you travel. We are booked on Voyager next year and again back to the Caribbean. Bon Voyage.

The cruise was a disaster. During the first day of the cruise, between Barbados and Antigua, my wife became ill, the ships doctor suspected a stroke, and arranged for her to taken to hospital when we reached Antigua. After a series of tests and a CT scan, there was no evidence of a stroke, the neurologist declared here fit to travel, however we were denied permission to reboard the ship, no reason given. WE WERE DUMPED IN ANTIGUA!

I made a conscious effort not to read any reviews before boarding the ship as they generally fluctuate between "superb" and "never go here again" in the space of two reviews dated at the same time. Having read some prior to writing this I can honestly say that I do sometimes wonder whether some people that go on holiday are either genuinely unlucky or just go to find as many nitpicking things as they can for the sheer hell of it. We've definitely noticed a pattern over the last 20 years or so that it's people from certain areas who are always the ones complaining, moaning or mithering several reps over the years have backed this up too including ones from those areas of the country. This was my wife and I's first Carribbean cruise having previously been around the Mediterranean three times and it was superb. The staff were friendly and helpful the entertainment team were always on hand to help pass the time but they were never pushy if you didn't want to participate. Bar service was good across all the ships bars and the range of drinks on the standard all inclusive package is very good. There really isn't any need to fork out for the premium package unless you're a brand snob who can't have "post mix coke" in their vodka /rum etc. All the reports of so called "binge drinking, vomiting" etc were either due to people having a bad experience or were over exaggerated for effect because across the whole 2 weeks we didn't experience any drunkenness rowdy behaviour, simulated fornication or any other type of "chavvy" shenanigans. Apart from the sea day on the Friday of the second week there wasn't ever people waiting for sun beds so it was never an issue to get one. We ate breakfast in the Islands buffet every day and had no issues with the quality or range of choice, again unless you are an extremely picky eater there is always something available to you. Most evenings we dined at 47 degrees on deck 4 with it's Al à Carte menu, once again the service was excellent and they couldn't do enough for you. We didn't go to any of the speciality restaurants mainly because they didn't appeal to us however a small criticism here is that in most hotels we've been to there has always been at least one complimentary visit to a "speciality restaurant" included which isn't the case here. We pre booked all our excursions in advance barring one which was sold out but we were able to book on board, these excursions were all excellent and very informative giving us an overview of each island we docked at. The one exception to this was the Death In Paradise excursion in Guadeloupe which really wasn't worth the almost £200 we paid for it. We personally preferred the security of going on the TUI tours rather than chancing our arm with taxis etc but it seems a lot of people had little or no issues doing it that way. I do find it very strange that some people will fly halfway around the world then just sit at a bar on a ship in a port and drink all day but to each their own I guess. We participated in the quizzes that happened every evening in the Squid and Anchor and came away with 6 certificates to show for it (40/40 twice as well)!! All in all apart from the few minor niggles mentioned we had a wonderful time and will be back next year on the sister ship Discovery 2.
