In looking at the previous negative reviews most were/are outside of the scope of Holland America/Rotterdam powers. Breakdown: Embarkation: So quick if you have already checked in via their app... I had a wheelchair and the wait was due to the person in front of me who had issues, but when it came to my turn it took no time all... The staff were so welcoming and was so easy... Food: Most if not all was good. The only complaint, and it's not even a complaint... The pizza was a bit lackluster at the deli and the burger at the burger bar was just ok... Fries at both places were eh... Main dining - can't complain and everything was good. Forgot the fish name but one night had their fish and it was probably the best fish I have had... Lido Market - selection after selection... and all were good. The only complaint is if they had a section for gluten free and sugar free. Tamarind - Quite a mix of asian food... no one nation dish but several so there was something for everyone. Rooms: Had the balcony, but had one on the 4th level which had an oversized verandah... it was the size of the room almost and loved spending time in the balcony, rather than the pool area. Also was thinking about the cabana club, but didn't need to spend the extra... Entertainment: Not the best at the world showcase, but ok... been spoiled by NY Broadway living in NY... BB KING - can't say enough about this... the BB King band was the best! singers, musicians, and the sets were all Motown and greats... spent every night there and couldn't get enough. wish they had more seats. Didn't spend much time at the other places... stopped by but not my cup of tea, but I am sure for others it might be the right choice. all depends on their music preference I guess. Shopping: I must say the prices weren't too bad. just wait for the end of the cruise to get some of the stuff.. ie... was eyeing a hat which went from 29.99 to 10.49... also we almost bought a used Chanel bag... actually was cheap compared to internet... remember no tax... It might be worth it but check your prices, even saw an excellent condition Rolex which we also considered... Gambling: don't gamble Drink package: don't drink, but... One person in our family did get it and it was well worth it. just use the formula that an average drink is about $11 and even coffee at the cafe was about $8. Look into their combined package which includes, wifi, and drinks. it also comes with a select dining and excursion credit... well worth it. Pool area: always the same problem with chair hogs which I wished they enforced better... But always crowded and didn't spend time there as I had the oversized verandah. Overall: The reputation of it being the geriatric crowd is a bit true, but they still party!!! There is that level of maturity that you get... each cruise line has their own forte. Holland America I think caters more to the older crowd for sure. Definitely go if you prefer a more relaxed cruise... this is not like a booze cruise, or is it an amusement cruise... It's more for relaxing and enjoying life... FINAL: Holland America is definitely my favorite cruise line so far. You can't get away from the rudeness of some passengers, but the staff and other nice folks truly make up for it. We were taking pictures on the deck and a man came out and asked if we would like him to take pictures. of course we did, and once we checked the pictures he took and all was good he went back inside... He literally came out to take our pics... what a sweet man!!! love how most people are so considerate!

I've been fortunate enough to travel in our great world including cruises such as Regent, Princess, celebrity etc lines and I always avoided taking a Holland American based on my perception of their cruises. To my surprise and delight they are not the boring line I thought with all seniors and slow with meh music options for entertainment. I doubted they would have a silent disco. However as it turns out they are very music focused. We hit the rolling stone bar with their band it was good however the music is tuned quiet you can't hear much if you walk out of the area. However another night we found the BB King lounge and their house band were banging! The ship in the middle has amazing music to dance and listen to and they are amazing. It completely changed my option on sailing HA to the point ready to book another. Positives - they have coffee lemonade and ice tea always available. Food in the buffet is always good (not fancy high end but good). I will say the dining room experience was a disappointment compared to princess or celebrity so we just kept with the lido buffet as they were almost the same food as the dining room minus things like French onion soup. We have an inside cabin as we don't spend much time in the room. Cabins are well appointed and the layout is different at least for this room we are wide vs deep with is a great setup. Room Stewards are a delight and very attentive to the rooms . Now there is a distinctive older crowd than celebrity however they didn't fold their services to that and it showed in the rocking BBking lounge at night. The other great thing this line does is the adult pool at the aft of the ship this was important as it's currently still spring break and it was easy to hit the back deck. For any who cruise princess or celebrity know the pools fill with kids making it hard to just float or use the hot tubs. This wasn't an issue. So for ship layout, service rooms I give a 4.5 and for food in the dining brought my overall scroe to a 4 So if you thought about Holland America line and don't Cus of thinking it's going to be slow and quiet you will be as surprised as I am.

The entire experience is overshadowed by smoking allowed on the ship. Smoke wafted down from the casino to the music venue areas. Even the "non-smoking" aft sun deck had smoke wafting from crew that were smoking in an adjacent area that was "roped off." Hint....the rope doesn't stop the smoke. I will NEVER again book with this line due to the cigarette smoke.

The cruise departed during a week when the seas were very, very rough. The captain acknowledged the trip was rocky, many passengers were sea sick. Other " cheaper" cruise lines offered passengers the choice to sail or rebook to another week. Holland America did not. We couldn't enjoy the food, or beverages we were too ill. The entertainment was cancelled and the shore excursions as well. The decks were closed off and the pools had waves and water splashing over onto the decks. We wrote to ship services and did not receive a response. The ship was beautiful too bad it was a really horrible week.
