Does anyone remember the Hotel de l'Esperance on rue Vavin - next to Hotel Danemark? Very cheap place with only a few rooms - they turned it into apartments so it's no longer there. I lived there for several months in the 70s and there were some interesting people - expats who hung out and drank at the Select. Any memories or photos anyone would like to share?
Has Madam Helene and her husband retired or sold the Hotel? Many years ago when we were staying in San Malo, the proprietor asked us where we were going to stay in Paris. When I told him he said "phew, you must stay with our friends, so I will call them" we protested but he insisted and and that began our love affair with Hotel de L'Esperance. 8 times, I believe. We found the hotel perfectly managed, always spotless and such a quaint place to stay. Madam Helene was always dressed to the 9's even at 6 am. The star system in France depends on dimensions among other things, and Hotel de L'Esperance is only a few cm's away from 3 stars. At under 100 E for their most expensive room, I think it is still a bargain. Our first stay cost around $50 USD a day. We are older and less mobile and stay longer so we use apartments now, but will always remember our days at l'Esperance.
