Destrehan Plantation Questions & Answers

Lafayette, Louisiana

Is this across the river from Luling? What year did renovation start? I think I used to go to a swimming pool nearby owned by Texaco in the late 40's and think this old home was still in disrepair.

This property was small refinery owned by Standard Oil (Indiana)/Amoco. The mansion was the admin building for the site. When Amoco closed down the refinery (in the 70's as I recall), they created a trust and turned over the site as a non-profit to manage it.

Yes, this is across the river from Luling and it was owned by an oil company during the time you described. From what I understand it was used by the company as a "clubhouse" and headquarters, so there may have been a pool there. It would be great if you have some photos of that era and could share them on Trip Advisor or their FaceBook page.

Can't be absolutely sure as we're from the UK and only wanted to visit the plantation at Destrehan ( which is well worth a visit) but if you look at the google map, it looks as though it is across the river from Luling. Sorry I can't be more help than that.

Yes, I think it is close to Luling. You should visit this plantation. Very historical. Great tour guides. I don't remember when the guide says restoration started. This very well might be the same place you remember from the 1940s. Louisiana is a very special state - old buildings and houses tend to be preserved here. Fascinating fact : first Mardi Gras ball was held in 1750 in this state. You should make the effort to visit here. I didn't see any Texaco swimming pool near there but I wasn't looking out for that either. Hope this helps!
