Highway 12 Scenic Byway Questions & Answers

Washington DC, District of Columbia

Hi All,

Me and a buddy will be traveling in September all throughout Utah and we have one day in particular where we will be using Route 12 to go from Bryce Canyon to Moab. I am really excited about all of the amazing stops there are along the way in particular we want to stop by the Escalante Petrified Forest and the Escalante Zebra Slot Canyon (a little out of the way). From there we will be heading to Capitol Reef and then to Moab.

My Question:

Should we stay on Route 12 and all the way to 24 and make our way to the Capitol Reef visitor center from there or should we get off at 168 and make our way to Scenic Drive and then to the Capitol Reef Visitor Center/Fruita and then onto 24 towards Moab.

I am thinking the latter, but I wanted to hear from everyone.

Thank you!

12 is very beautiful road to drive. 12-24-I 70-191 is the one I took and that will take you through Capitol reef national park to Moab. On 12, you will go through small towns and watch out your speed. One day is pretty tight. Enjoy your trip.

Taking 168 to Scenic Dr. into CR holds the promise of better scenery (I drove SR 12 to US 24) but I have to say that the itinerary you outline will need much more than "one day in particular" to accomplish.

If you and your buddy like hiking and camping you could use the Petrified Forest State Park as a base (itself easily worth a 1/2 day) from which to visit several sites instead of "blitzing" through which is what you are going to have to do in the time you are allowing..

I would definitely take the latter. Far more enjoyable a drive.
