It's not even close. The best jazz place is Smalls. Go look at their lineups. It is the jazz center of the universe. You can watch jazz online live too. Smalls is amazing.

For history you have the Bluenote, Village Vanguard, and some other historic places.

If you want a more upscale purchase, head towards Lincoln Center or Dizzie's.

Check out the Jazz at Lincoln Center website. It's not located at Lincoln Center but in the Time Warner Building. There are three venues - the Rose Theater, the Appel Room and Dizzie's. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis plays in the Rose Theatre and they are incredible. I don't think that there are better jazz musicians anywhere. The Appel Room has various jazz musicians. It's a gorgeous theater and the entire back wall is made of windows looking out on Central Park and Central Park West. If you go in the evening, you have all of the lights and it's wonderful. Dizzie's is a jazz club with a varied repertoire of jazz. You can eat and drink there as well - just like a regular jazz club.

Blue Note Jazz Club and Smalls Jazz Club were two I visited in September 2017. Both were excellent evenings. You can also eat at Blue Note, whereas Smalls is a tiny underground atmospheric place just for the music and a drink.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can chime in, we were there too short a time.

We visited one before it opened on the walking tour we took, and it was in a basement and looked pretty cool.
