After setting off on a solo backpacking adventure across Asia in 2013, the travel bug within me never calmed down. I sold my stuff in the Netherlands to work for a hospitality startup in Bangkok and have been exploring more of Asia ever since. When I'm not in Bangkok, you can find me Taiwan, where I spend quite some time each year. It's not uncommon for me to leave a new city without visiting its famous tourist landmarks, but instead discovering a dozen of cool neighbourhoods, galleries and coffee shops.
Noppharathara Beach is only a few minutes outside of Ao Nang, but less crowded than its busy neighbor Ao Nang Beach. The water off the coast is very shallow and calm, so this beach is ideal for young children.
The Catfish Farm just outside Ao Nang is a lovely afternoon activity where you can take a break from the beaches. You'll find everything from cats to crocodiles to the cute little monkey, 'Rosie' (a real crowd pleaser).
Jungle Kitchen is a hidden gem just outside the center of Ao Nang. The friendly staff cooks some of the best Thai dishes I have had around here — for a price you wouldn't expect! The bamboo tables and jungle decorations definitely add to the good vibe.
Ao Phang Nga National Park has it all. Spread over 40 little islands, it offers excellent beaches, impressive rock formations, and huge caves you can discover by canoe. This is a great day trip from Ao Nang and will keep the kids talking about it for weeks after your visit.
If you're a seafood lover and looking for a more 'upscale' dining experience, don't miss out on Lae Lay Grill. This beautiful restaurant is set up on a hill, providing stunning views over the ocean and its outlying islands.
This minigolf course has definitely seen better years, but if you ignore the bad spots, it's a great place to relax while keeping the kids entertained. The kebabs are seriously good, and a great break from the standard Thai menu.
Ao Nang Beach is a great place for a lazy day. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes around, and the facilities are well maintained. The beach can get pretty crowded, which can be a great thing for families because it's a great place to find playmates!
While Thai food is incredibly delicious, if you are crave a little Western comfort food from time to time, Blue Mango is one of my favorite places to grab a slice of pizza or a plate of pasta. The restaurant serves a special kids' menu too.
