Jessica B's City Tips

  • It is common to tip about 10% in restaurants but check the bill before you do so: some restaurants automatically charge you a 10% (or more) service fee.
  • If you are getting two or more buses a day, invest in a "Day Saver" ticket.
  • If you're arriving by train, buy an "Open Day Return" ticket; this lets you take any train home that day, thus giving you more flexibility.
  • If you're exploring Liverpool's nightlife, be sure to dress up to fit in.

A definite must see, this 200-year-old labyrinth of underground tunnels was constructed by the eccentric businessman Joseph Williamson. Only recently rediscovered, no one knows why he had the tunnels built or how far they actually stretch. One of Liverpool's biggest mysteries.

    Tips
    • There is a small admission charge to enter the tunnels, with discounts for young children, students and families.
    • The tunnels are not accessible to wheelchair users.
    • There is a café and small exhibition centre at the entrance to the tunnels.
    • Parking at the tunnels is limited so it is better to get the train or bus from the city centre. The nearest train station is Edge Hill.

Grand Central is home to an exciting range of independent, alternative shops selling everything from vinyl records to comic books and vintage clothes. Although the shops might not be to everyone's taste, it's the colourful and quirky architecture that makes Grand Central worth a visit.

    Jessica B Says:

At first sight this curious art installation might just seem like a group of random suitcases dumped in the middle of the street. On closer inspection, you'll notice that each suitcase belongs to someone who has made a positive impact on the city of Liverpool. A nearby board explains who the 'owners' of the suitcases are.

A church unlike any other, St Luke's was bombed during the Blitz of World War II. With no roof, nature has taken over and the frame of the building stands in memory of what was lost during the war. An extremely peaceful place and well worth a visit.
