Goannas's City Tips

  • You don't have to stay in a dorm in a hostel to get cheaper accommodation. Try student accommodation. It's basic but affordable and in some great locations.
  • There is always lots of advice about Travelcards vs Oyster cards. We like the best of both worlds. We have 7 day Travelcards loaded on our Oyster Cards and travel on buses and the Tube in Zones 1 & 2 whenever and as often as we need to. If we need to go further afield, we just load a bit of credit on the card. A paper Travelcard will do the same thing and may offer you discounts on entry into some of the major attractions. We have always found the staff at the stations more than helpful.
  • Carry a map ... and use it. Don't worry about looking like a tourist. Pretty much everyone else does, too.
  • If you're a National Trust or English Heritage member you'll be able to take advantage of free or discounted entry into some places, giving you even more low-cost options.
  • Almost all the museums on this list are free for general entry. Some have special displays which will have a charge and you may need to book them in advance.

These 2 hour guided walks always start and finish near a tube station. A great way to find out about a snippet of history and some hidden gems. You'll find places you'd like to go back to. Good value, interesting and entertaining.

You've seen the Tube Map and thought you'd never understand it, right? Change lines when you need to. Don't be afraid. Just follow the maps at each station. This is the most efficient public transport system I've come across.
