Living Madrid

95%
Found this guide helpful

I have been living in Madrid for about 10 years now. As most of the foreigners I felt it hard to like the city at first, but now I love it : Madrid doesn't adjust to people moving to town, it maintains its very Spanish way of being while welcoming newcomers from all over the world. The city might not have a huge tourist attraction, it provides a variety of interesting features to please anyone...and the countryside is nearby.

onzils's City Tips

  • The tourist office publishes a monthly guide with activities...the easiest way to look for special exhibitions in galleries, for concerts or for special sport events. Also online.
  • Don't forget quite a few of foundations also organize interesting exhibitions. Most of these are free (Mapfre, ICO, Juan March...).
  • Most museums in Madrid have time slots when you can visit for free. Check it out.
  • When having little time to eat or out of standard kitchen opening hours, enter a normal bar and ask for a "pincho de tortilla", the Spanish omelet : nice and cheap!
  • Whatever some waiters may say, tipping is no standard routine and is only done when you're extremely happy with the service in a restaurant.
  • Traditional Spanish restaurants open from 1pm (to about 3:30) for lunch, from 9pm (to about 10:30) for dinner.
  • Summer can and will be hot : shops close between 2 and 5-6pm, and you better adapt as well.
  • Bus service available all night. Tickets are cheaper when bought at the "estanco", the local tobacco and newspaper shop.
  • Public transport is very well organized : metro, regional train ("cercanias") and bus cover the entire metropolitan area. Buy 10 trip tickets at the stations.
