Porto is a wonderful city to spend a few days in with the family. The streets are vibrant and safe to walk along, and there are lots of things to do with children. I would recommend at least three days for enjoying all the city has to offer, and in this guide I will share my personal favorites when it comes to traveling as a family and with kids.

AndreParente's City Tips

  • There are lots of nice, well located tourist apartments in Porto that are perfect if traveling with a family.
  • In the center you can easily get around on foot. But if you want to explore a bit more outside the city, renting a car may be the best option.
  • Tipping in restaurants is appreciated but by no means mandatory.

How cool is it that you can take your kids to the bookshop that reportedly inspired J.K.Rowling while she was writing the first adventures of Harry Potter? It’s well worth a visit. Take a good look around and enjoy the architecture, the old bookshelves, and the stained glass windows of this historic bookshop in Porto. It has been nominated the third most beautiful in the world, and if you are a book lover, you will certainly appreciate the details: the rails for the old book carts, and the historical references in particular.

Éclairs. Yes, they may be a french delicacy, but there is no way you can say no to one from Leitaria da Quinta do Paço. Of course, you can go for the traditional 'nata' (custard tart) but the eclair is the speciality and sure to be a hit with every member of the family. Plus, you can sit and enjoy a coffee or juice on the terrace. It’s right in the center, and within easy walking distance of some of the most iconic places in Porto.

If you are addicted to ice cream or just a fan of the occasional scoop, this place is a mandatory visit. The ice creams are soft and delicate and you can enjoy them on the outdoor 'terrazza.' The most difficult task will be to choose the flavor! Fruity? Sweet? Sour? Salty? Mr Sousa and Miss Manuela will welcome you with a smile and will not make your choice any easier. From the simplest ice cream cups to the sugary gaufres, not to mention the delicious crepes, they serve the most incredible and decadent range of delights for you to sample.

This is one of the best museums in Porto. Here, you’ll get in touch with the history of the city itself and its transportation through the evolution of the tram system, and it’s a cool museum for kids especially as they can touch and experiment. No matter what your opinion is, this building is likely to go unnoticed during your trip, and for that reason alone, it’s worth a visit.
