Athens, the crowning diamond on Earth's ring

Found this guide helpful

Athens “The crowning diamond on Earth’s ring” The city’s name was given by Goddess of Wisdom Athena, after her victorious contest against Poseidon, the God of Sea. The Goddess afterwards, passed her love for knowledge to its citizens, alongside the cultivation of olive tree and how to extract precious olive oil. The city evolved and flourished always around the big Rock of Acropolis. All important things through time happened upon and around this Rock. Acropolis is therefore considered as the heart of this city since its historic dawn. What you see –today- as the city of Athens, is a city above cities stratified at levels below. This you can fully understand when visiting the Underground Metro Station at Syntagma Square, where the various -in time- city levels are elaborately shown through the glass covered south walls. Try not to miss this optical experience. Dear traveler, you may find below ideas and suggestions where to go and what to see, smell and taste in this city, based upon the time availability of your stay here. 1. One day stay. • National Archaeological Museum (2 hours). Here you may realize the Ancient Greek Civilization and see its tracks through prehistoric and historic periods of time. The most important message here is that through 40 centuries the Greek language has been basically the same, which is unique in Global history. • Climb up the Acropolis Rock (2-3 hours). You can still “hear the marble breathing” on the Rock… • Visit the New Acropolis Museum (2 hours) in the vicinity of the Rock. This Museum contains everything found on Acropolis or around the Rock. Just imagine here, that regardless of the countless destructions and pillage done by foreign enemy armies or occupants or Cultural thieves, there were still a lot of findings to fill up this remarkably modern Museum. It is suggested to have a short lunch in its restaurant at the Museum’s top floor and balcony, looking at Acropolis bathing in the afternoon daylight. • Take a small rest at your hotel and go out to dinner after 20.30 hours, either around Kolonaki square (Prytaneion restaurant), or Dionyssos restaurant (vis-à-vis to Acropolis illuminated at night) or at Mikrolimano (Piraeus sea side) with its wonderful seafood taverns (Varoulko restaurant). • In the case you prefer to do shopping, try Ermou walking street, starting from Syntagma Square and heading west. On your way, please do not miss to notice “Kapnikarea” Byzantine church, a priceless Orthodox preserved monument, aged nearly 1000 years. • In the case that you prefer to “feel” closer to Greek people and their food tastes and scents, you better walk Evripidou street (starting very near Klafthmonos square and heading west) -during working hours only- and smell all the goodies sold there (all types of pepper and Greek herbs). You may also have lunch at Meydanis’ tavern (Evripidou and Socratous 3 street) or the nearby Karamanlidika tavern -only noon hours both- at the sounds of local popular music). Then, you may continue on this very street and reach Psiri area which is very lively at night with bars and small restaurants, some of them also with local music. • When the night is at its “small” hours and you still have enough energy to spend, Skoufa street with its lively bars may meet your needs. 2. Two, three or more days stay. Assuming that you have made your choices from above (1 day stay for your first day), you may additionally proceed to the following city interesting areas to explore: • Try to walk around the historical center of Athens on the path that connects and unifies the city’s visit able archaic sites. You may start from Dionyssiou Areopagitou walking street (that passes in front the new Acropolis Museum and Acropolis Rock, turning afterwards at Thission Metro Station and then right to Adrianou Street and Plaka district ending up to Syntagma Square). This can take you more than half day, since you may also visit the Ancient Greek Agora, Keramikos ancient Cemetery, Ancient Roman Agora, do shopping in Flee Market adjacent to Plaka, you may also have coffee or ouzo (typical local aperitif) anywhere on your way, or even lunch at Adrianou Street taverns / restaurants and end up to Syntagma Square. You may also do this round-about starting vice-versa from Syntagma Square towards Adrianou Street and then turn left to Dionyssiou Areopagitou walk-way. Very enjoyable indeed. • Climb the long and tedious stairs up to Lycabettus hill with its Saint George Chapel on top of it and rejoice the view of all Athens and Piraeus. • Visit the Byzantine Museum and realize how strongly connected are Greek temperament with Orthodox religion. • Take a bus and visit Cape Sounion with Poseidon temple on its summit. There, you will lose yourself between the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea while the always strong wind on the Cape performs as a mystic catalyst. • Take a bus and visit the Marathon Dam and Marathon village / archaeological site. At Marathon, the Greek troops won a glorious victory against invading Persian armies (400 years BC). After this victory, an Athenian soldier ran as quickly as possible the long kilometers between Marathon and Athens to announce their triumph in battle. Thus the Marathon Run became an Olympic contest. Walk on the beach of Schinias and rejoice the pine tree forest that extends till the white sands of the Marathon bay. Do not miss to visit the brand new Museum at Marathon! • Take a ferry from Piraeus and visit the island of Aegina (very near Piraeus). Aegina housed the first Government summoned by Governor Kapodistrias, since the liberation from Turkish occupation (400 years). On this same island, you can also visit the ancient temple of Athina Afea. Before you leave Greece, please consider and try to remember that Greek language is nearly the same for 40 centuries and has provided meaningful scientific, cultural and social terms for so many languages.
