FaboFinds's City Tips

  • Enjoy a nice long lunch as many shops close in the heat of the day, around 1.30pm and re-open again around 5pm.
  • Greek is spoken on Rhodes, but you'll find many people will speak English as well.
  • If you are looking for gifts, locally-made lace, hand-carved bowls from olive wood, local honey, colorful pottery, olive oil, and jewelry can be found in the local shops.
  • When dining in restaurants, a service charge is usually added to the bill, but if you feel you had exceptional service, you can always leave some extra Euro.
  • Rhodes typically has 300 days of sunshine a year. The heat and sun can be intense, so make sure you dress appropriately to keep cool, pack your sunscreen, and have plenty of water to drink.
  • Rhodes Town is great for exploring on foot, but make sure you wear comfortable shoes.
  • Make sure you stop in a taverna to sample the local dishes and wines.

Start your day at the impressive acropolis: an extensive site that includes many structures such as several temples, a stadium, gymnasium, and library, to name but a few.

Next, head over to this medieval castle, which was previously a citadel of the Knights Hospitaller, including a palace, headquarters, and fortress. It is one of the few examples of gothic architecture in Greece and definitely worth a visit.

Located in the Hospital of the Knights of St. John, this museum features exhibits from the Mycenaean era to early Christian time, and includes various examples of the arts from the Knights themselves. The artifacts are fascinating, and the gardens provide a lovely spot to have a wander through.

After lunch, stop in at the Jewish Museum, which is a tribute to the Jewish people that were forced to leave Rhodes during WWII. Their ordeal is documented through pictures and documents about the 1673 Jews that were deported to Germany; 151 survived.
