The Heritage Rail Trail is located in John Forrest, near Midland, about 30km to the East of Perth. The ride is a loop and there are several places to park and join it. There are car parks in Greenmount at the junction of Morrison Rd and Swan View Rd and also at the Mountain Quarry on Rason Parade. You can also join the trail in one of the many small towns that it runs through such as Darlington or Mundaring. If you don't have a car it is possible to take your bike on the Trans Perth train to Midland and then cycle the short distance to Rason Parade where the Rail Trail crosses the road.
Once on the trail navigation is easy. Simply follow the wide, well surfaced track. The only major hill is the long steady climb from Greenmount to Mundaring. Take care when crossing roads. At these junctions there are signposts with distances to the towns and roads. The whole loop is nearly 40km long. There are plenty of great places to stop for lunch, or it is possible to ride shorter sections. The area around John Forrest is particularly scenic.
The Heritage Rail Trail also connects to the Munda Biddi (heads south from Mundaring) and the Kep Track (East towards Northam from Mount Helena).
