Aucklanders have enjoyed something of a culinary renaissance over the past few years. Britomart, Federal Street and the Wynyard Quarter are all new foodie precincts that have sprung up in the city faster than you can say "fish carpaccio." Auckland offers a wide range of dining experiences from vibrant CBD (Central Business District) bistros that are always on simmer to trendy converted warehouses with views over the harbor. Here is my list of the top finds. These are the dining spots that separate themselves from the rest, so you, as the visitor, can feel fully "in the know" straight off the plane.

turiguide's City Tips

  • It's easy to move around bars & restaurants in each precinct/neighborhood on foot, however you will want to take short taxi rides between areas — even if you are ridiculously full.
  • The small shared plate trend is fashionable in NZ. Love it or hate it, it pays to ask your waiter about the size of the dish when you order.
  • Officially we don't have a tipping culture in NZ, but it has now become standard practice to tip about 10% in good restaurants or anywhere that you receive excellent service.

A foodie precinct blossomed around the bottom of the Sky Tower a few years back, and Al Brown's Depot on Federal led the charge with a casual eatery that was bang on the money: simple food, done well, to be enjoyed with friends. This place has energy all the time — it's fast, exciting, honest, and hearty. I always notice that the guests here look like they're having the best time, so double thumbs up for people watching. Open all day, seven days a week, Depot doesn't take bookings, so expect a wait to be seated at peak times. You'll be glad you waited, though, once you sink into slinky oysters from the raw bar, robust BBQ meats, and dessert sharing plates, all at very affordable prices.

    Tips
    • Sliders have been trendy for awhile now, and Auckland doesn't seem to tire of them. Try the Turbot Sliders.
    • My personal favorite are the Tortillas with preserved lemon, slaw, and cumin-battered warahou (the Maori name for a local sea bream).
    • Depot won Metro Magazine's Restaurant of the year — the most prestigious dining award in Auckland — in 2012 and again in 2015.

An Auckland favorite, this modern Japanese restaurant has all the ingredients for a superb experience: food with the cleanest of flavors, served in an airy, historic building across the road from the waterfront and wharf. Small plates, large plates, bento boxes, sushi — whatever your style, the food here is refreshingly healthy and presented like a work of art. Himachi Kingfish Sashimi is the signature dish.

    turiguide Says:

Cafe Hanoi is Vietnamese at its best. In fact, many restaurateurs from all around the country have tried to copy this foodie heaven. But Hanoi remains the real deal, with its authentic dishes that are generous in size, color and flavor. Fresh ingredients of coriander, lime, mint, dill, bokchoy, and papaya are combined with ethically sourced free-range meats and seafood. You will be spoiled for choice with these healthy sharing plates (even my 11-year-old approves!). Located in the historic Excelsior Building, the restaurant is handy if you want to get to the shopping action of Britomart and the central city.

Tantalize your senses with a blast of Thai-infused food that's on Auckland's 'it' list for its cool interiors and sharp flavors. Found in a heritage stand-alone house on the hipster Ponsonby main street, MooChowChow was a breath of fresh air to Auckland's dining scene when it launched about five years ago. There's plenty of zing in this hipster haunt.

Ortolana means 'market garden,' and this is the mantra for everything here, from the garden-to-fork ingredients to the setting in a glass conservatory framed with foliage (with fairy lights at night). Everything is incredibly fresh, and I am always inspired by the seafood, pasta, and organic meat dishes. And perhaps the best surprise comes at the end of your meal, when you realize how affordable it is to dine so well here.

Don't let the 'cafe' in the name fool you. The French Cafe is arguably Auckland's most accomplished fine dining restaurant, with too many awards to list. Displaying pared-back elegance in both design and food, it's a love song to that oh-so-French idea that less is more. Executive chef Simon Wright trained in some of Europe's top Michelin Star restaurants and focuses on seasonality of produce. Premium NZ wines from the cellar, along with an outstanding degustation menu, have both locals and travelers returning time and again. Wander around the edible garden, and enjoy courtyard dining in warmer months.

Woodpecker Hill is the new 'it' place for good reason. Dark timbers and plush furs line this exciting eatery, and the food is smartly presented and absolutely divine. The mix of Asian and smokey BBQ flavors ends up being even more delicious than it sounds. I think the range of starters are the highlight. Sharing plates that you won't want to share are the only downside.

This bustling brasserie is set in an expansive warehouse on the second floor of the historic Seafarers building. On one side of the building, there is a harbor view of the 24-hour port, which is a hive of activity and lends itself to an industrial feel. From the terrace style bar on the other side of the building, you look down onto a side lane of the Britomart precinct, which is especially sparkling at night. NZ's Master Chef judge Josh Emett is approachable, clever, and passionate about local produce, and his glossy eatery shares those traits.

Quite simply, The Store is a favorite in my family for breakfast and lunch. Set in a relaxed courtyard, it's an oasis among the tall buildings of the central-city Britomart area. There are different ways you can choose your have meal here: There is grab-and-go 'gourmet convenience' food at one entrance, or you can nab one of the casual tables away from the hustle and bustle. Our kids never struggle to choose from the delicious and healthy menu (mind you, the kids are fast becoming foodies too), and they always seem to remember the array of brightly colored gelato on display at the counter inside. The Store's convenient position makes it a great place to rest and refuel after shopping.
