turiguide's City Tips

  • Although you can get around each shopping area on foot, it's best to take short taxi rides between the precincts, especially if you are carrying lots of bags!
  • The shops in some areas stay open late on Friday nights, usually until 9pm. These areas include Queen Street and the larger Westfield Malls.
  • If you don't want to lug your purchases around, some shops will send them home for you. You'll get the 15% GST credited to you, which usually covers the cost of mailing.

Parnell is a beautiful tree-lined area where upmarket clothing boutiques, antiques, jewelry stores, and art galleries sit side by side with equally desirable cafes, restaurants, and bars. It's simple to navigate as it's all to be found along the main street. Parnell Rise is a neighborhood within a neighborhood, but is mostly full of expensive furniture design shops.

    Tips
    • Have a drink after your day of shopping at one of the chic nightspots here.
    • The Parnell Rose Garden is worth a meander through if you need a change of scene from the shops.
    • I really like the home wares shops at the top of the hill.

Funky, arty, and right on-trend is the best way to describe this precinct. I always start at Ponsonby Central, a great shopping experience all under one roof, and essential refueling in one of the coolest eating zones. Next I'll walk up one side of the main street and then down the other side of the road to get my fix of unique boutiques, gifts, homeware, and curios.

For a small, narrow lane, this spot is brimming with cool. Use this as your thoroughfare to go between the Queen Street stretch of shops and the must-see High Street/ Chancery precinct. The lane is filled mostly with cafes and a few interesting shops, but it really is all about the two streets that run parallel at either end of it. I use Vulcan Lane as a pit stop for refueling before venturing out for more shopping.

There are a few parts to Newmarket that would be easy to miss if you didn't know about them. The main stretch of road known as 'Broadway' has the big chain brands, but the back streets are far more interesting. Find Nuffield Street for top-end NZ clothing designers like Karen Walke — two blocks long and full of chic. Also look for the Morrow Street Sector, which begins at Westfield 277 on the corner of Morrow and Broadway. Get lost and found in 'The Lanes,' which are the back streets behind Broadway with Teed Street as the boundary.

This is the heart of the city so expect all the usual large chain shops mixed with cafes and boutiques down its side arcades. This is the place to search for New Zealand souvenirs, from greenstone carved jewelry to the NZ All Black rugby accessories. Smith & Caughey marks the unofficial top of Queen Street and the Viaduct ferry terminal building is where Queen Street finishes.
