About Kirsty S
Lives in London, United Kingdom
Since Feb 2015
I have travelled extensively through Southeast Asia. I know Thailand and Malaysia particularly well, but also love Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore. I travel to this part of the world whenever I can, sometimes on a short trip while on route to Australia, and sometimes for extended periods of time so that I can really get beneath the skin of a particular area – whether I’ve been to that spot before or not. I've spent a lot of time in Bangkok – it's a fascinating melting pot of a city where there's always something new to explore. I also love Hanoi and have explored it both independently and as part of an organised tour. More than anything, I love discovering something new while travelling and sharing it with those who have the same passion for travel as I do. I’m a bit of a foodie and never get bored of the beach.
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Beaches, Caverns & Caves
If arriving at Langkawi’s ferry jetty, be sure to stop off at ‘Eagle Square’ to take a few pictures of the giant eagle monument located here. The eagle is the emblem of Langkawi and this statue certainly takes center-stage, although the surrounding views of Kuah Bay are also pretty spectacular.
Once you’ve picked up your hire car (or motorbike), head inland towards Langkawi’s highest peak, Mount Raya. You’ll take a scenic, winding path through the jungle to reach it and be rewarded with fabulous panoramic views of the island and its surroundings on arrival. There’s a resort at the top, which sells food and drinks and provides access to its viewing tower for a small charge.
For an authentic Malaysian lunch, drive down to Siti Fatimah’s, where the food is divine and the prices are low. It’s a buffet style affair that can get incredibly busy at lunch time, packed with locals choosing from such favorites as nasi lemak and other Malaysian staples, not to mention spicy salads, delicious curries, grilled fish, and scrumptious stir-fries.
Discover one of Langkawi’s beautiful waterfalls after lunch by heading over to the magnificent Telaga Tujuh falls. Here you can marvel, hike, and splash around amid some simply stunning natural scenery.
At the foot of the mountain that the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls call home is the Oriental Village and the departure point for the Langkawi Cable Car. The steepest of its kind in the world, the ride provides staggering panoramic jungle and island views as it slowly climbs the majestic Mount Mat Cincang.
Despite being short on time, a beach visit is a must when in Langkawi. If you like your beaches quiet, clean, and beautiful head to the beach at Tanjung Rhu, which has a distinct paradise island feel to it. There’s only one resort here and it’s a peaceful place to relax for an hour or so.
From the beach at Tanjung Rhu to the mangrove forests of the Kilim Geoforest Park. This protected area is home to a landscape of karst hills and mangrove forests, plus a huge and fascinating array of flora and fauna. The entire area is a natural mix of forest, limestone rocks, caves, and dramatic coastline.
You’d be hard-pressed to fit in a Kilim Karst Geoforest tour as well as an island-hopping trip in one day, so if you prefer paradise islands where you can relax on the beach, explore freshwater lakes, and snorkel in crystal clear seas, opt for an island hopping tour instead. With this trip, you’ll get to see the most popular of the Langkawi islands at a very reasonable price.
If you haven’t had enough beach time yet and want to squeeze in a magnificent sunset before dinner, head to Cenang Beach. This is a popular spot, with ample watersport offerings and plenty of places to enjoy some food and drink. The benefit of visiting later in the day is two-fold; the heat is much more bearable and the sunsets are superb.
To wrap up an incredibly busy day, treat yourself to dinner at Privilege, which overlooks the harbor at Telaga. The food here is great, with subtle yet balanced flavors. It’s a particularly safe choice for those who are not keen on too much spice, but still appreciate quality food with fantastic flavors.
