Ease of arrival

On arrival at KLIA should you use the Ekspres train or a taxi? It depends on how many are in your party. Having used both it comes down to convenience compared to cost, and what is the difference. If on a tight budget, and you are young single or a couple, and fit, perhaps the Ekspres train is the most cost effective, but you still have to add the cost of a taxi, Monorail or Rapidrail from Sentral (railway station) to your hotel, and the inconvenience of manhandling your bags For three or more people a taxi is the most cost effective, and convenient, but be aware the journey is about forty five minutes to an hour, depending on time of day. Based on actual costs in 2014, the cost of the Ekspress train was RM 35 / person one way, a total of RM 105 for three people, and add RM 40 for a taxi to the major hotel area, we arrive at a total cost of RM 145. A taxi from the KLIA cost me RM 134 for four people – door to door. On departure - Depending on the airline that you use to depart Kuala Lumpur, the air line check-in at Sentral is a breeze. My wife and I, and our friends usually use Malaysian Airlines, which allows us to check-in at Sentral, but recently other airlines have added check-in facilities – Royal Brunei, Cathay Pacific, Emirates and Etihad The cost compared to convenience is now reversed. With a morning flight of 9.00 am from KLIA requires a check-in of two to two and a half hours before take-off. We usually leave our hotel at 6.30 am for the fifteen minute drive to Sentral, where we check-in and lodge our suitcases. The Ekspress train, just after 7.00 am, has us at KLIA in twenty eight minutes, and we stroll through immigration and security with just hand baggage, and miss the stressful airport check-in and checked bag lodging. We arrive stress free at the departure gate after a short visit to the duty free area. We consider the extra cost of the Ekspress system worth paying, because of the lack of stress. My blog has further details of KL.

Geoff W's City Tips

  • For those with heavy suitcases I would not use the monorail system due to the stairs required to get to / from the platform, and the number of steps involed depends on your stop.

As short walk from the hotel to KLCC and Petronas Towers. Plenty of restaurants within the area. Three minute walk to the Monorail (Bukit Nanas) for Chiantown or Bukit Bintang shopping area. About twenty minute drive to Sentral for the KLIA Ekspres.

Doesn't look like a 'posh' restaurant - food is OK, and beer is cold - an inexpensive restaurant right in the centre of Chinatown, which is very convenient when shopping in the area.

A landmark for ease of location - it can be seen for miles. You have to be an early starter to gain the free tickets to walk across the tower bridge.
