Kirsty S's City Tips

  • Most restaurants in Kuala Lumpur will charge a 10% service charge. While tipping over and above this is not expected, many locals round up their bill and leave the change.
  • Kuala Lumpur's heavy traffic means it’s best to steer clear of taxis and buses if heading out in the morning or evening rush hours. Walking or the urban rail network is recommended.
  • Despite Kuala Lumpur being a cosmopolitan city that sees many tourists, it’s respectful to dress in an appropriate way. This means covered knees and shoulders for the ladies.

    Kirsty S Says:

Jalan Alor is one of the best places in the city to pick up tasty and affordable street food. It’s a short but lively street giving a glimpse into how Kuala Lumpur used to be before the skyscrapers and shopping malls rolled into town. Sample staple Malay favourites like nasi dagang (fish curry and coconut rice) and hokkien mee (noodles with pork and squid), alongside food from Singapore, Thailand and China.

    Kirsty S Says:

The Hakka Restaurant is an affordable eatery in the Twin Towers area of the capital. Hakka cuisine originates from southeast China and is incredibly popular among Malaysians, so eat like a local and enjoy the atmosphere of this huge outdoor setting where you’ll find everything from steamed ginger crab to sizzling tofu – plus everything in between.

If your idea of a great dinner experience is more about fine wine, great food and spectacular views then dinner at Atmosphere 360 is a must. Located at the top of KL Tower, it may be pricey by Malaysian standards, but the incredible views of Kuala Lumpur’s skyline as you slowly revolve 360 degrees make it all worthwhile.

    Kirsty S Says:

Nasi Kandar Pelita began as a small family-run business and now has over 50 branches. One of them is on Jalan Ampang, and is an affordable little gem right in the midst of the swanky (and more expensive) restaurants in the Petronas Twin Towers area. Authentic Malay food at its best, I’d consider this an absolute must for foodies visiting Kuala Lumpur.

Some of the best food in Kuala Lumpur can be found huddled around Petaling Street. The Chinatown area of the capital is home to some wonderful food courts, hawker stalls and traditional restaurants selling everything from dim sum to stir-fried noodles. Chinatown is not to be missed – for the atmosphere and the food.
