  • Wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk quite a bit.

  • Carry insect repellent when venturing into the parks.
  • Mumbai's weather is generally hot, so wear lightweight clothing, and be sure to bring along plenty of water and sunscreen.

    Deepa_Krishnan Says:

The rock-cut Hindu caves at Elephanta are a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kids will enjoy the breezy one-hour ferry boat ride across the bay, and there is a toy train ride on the island. Elephanta is beautiful and green, and the mangrove tree ecology of the island is fascinating. The climb up the hill is interesting — the steps are lined on either side with street stalls selling curios — and at the caves you can bring the legends of Shiva to life by telling the stories carved in the panels.

    Good for
    • Peace and Quiet Seeker
    • Must See
    • History Buff
    • Art and Architecture Lover
    • Nature Lover
    Tips
    • The caves are closed on Mondays.
    • Children up to 15 years old can enter the caves free of charge.
    • In summer, it is best to go in the morning, because the rocky island gets very hot in the afternoon.
    • Don’t carry any food or drink up to the caves — the monkeys will grab them.
    • During monsoon season (June-September) the water is choppy and the ferry service is limited. For safety reasons, I suggest you avoid going during the rains.
    • You need around five hours to visit the caves, including the ferry ride time.
    • Keep an eye out for interesting reptiles and birds.
    • Take the ferry early to avoid crowds. The earliest ones leave between 8:45 and 9:00am, and ferry tickets can be bought on the spot — there is no reservation system.

The house where Gandhi stayed whenever he visited Mumbai is now a small, intimate museum that the whole family will find inspiring and educational. Here, you can see the room where Gandhi lived and worked, and also learn about India’s struggle for independence, and the ideals for which Gandhi lived and died.

    Good for
    • Peace and Quiet Seeker
    • History Buff
    Tips
    • The diorama room, which tells the story of Gandhi's life through figurines, is especially great for kids.
    • The gift shop at the museum has Gandhi’s autobiography, as well as other books with quotes from the great man. Proceeds go toward museum upkeep.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a wonderful place for trekking, cycling, and walking, with the ancient Buddhist Kanheri caves at the top. You can easily spend five to six hours here. Children will enjoy the toy train ride, as well as a tiger and lion safari, and there are also facilities for boating. The Conservation Education Center of the Bombay Natural History Society is also located inside the park, and they regularly conduct nature walks.

    Good for
    • Peace and Quiet Seeker
    • Hidden Gems
    • Nature Lover
    Tips
    • The Kanheri caves are over 2,000 years old and stunning — don’t miss them!
    • You can hire bicycles at the park and cycle around, all the way to the Kanheri caves.
    • There are public toilets at the caves.
    • Snacks like cucumbers, guava, raw mango, and chips are available, but take water and food with you if you are planning for a day of trekking.
    • The tiger and lion safaris allow you to see the animals in fenced-in enclosures; some may find it unexciting.
    • The park is beautiful in the monsoons — green and fresh, with waterfalls — however the rocks at Kanheri can get slippery in the rain.
    • Watch out for aggressive monkeys — they’re attracted to any food that you carry.

A picnic at the beach is always fun! Take the ferry from Gateway of India to Mandwa, and from there, you can get local transport to Kashid Beach. You can also drive to Kashid — it is quite scenic and only takes three or so hours. Don’t forget to taste the superb Konkan coastal cuisine!

    Good for
    • Family
    • Peace and Quiet Seeker
    • Beach Goer
    Tips
    • If you don't want to go that far, you can go to beaches within Mumbai city — at Juhu, Marine Drive, and Dadar — but these may be more crowded and a bit dirty.
    • Make sure you check ferry timings so that you know when you need to get to the return ferry.
    • It gets very crowded on weekends, so try to go on a weekday.
    • You can return the same day, or spend a night at a beach resort. If you decide to stay overnight, you'll have time for a visit to the imposing seafort Murud-Janjira.
    • If you’re going by ferry, you may need to haggle with local autorickshaws for a ride from the ferry to the beach.

Adlabs Imagica is probably the best amusement park in the city. In addition to having some very good rides, it's well-maintained, and there is enough entertainment to fill a whole day. The park is a two-hour drive from the city.

    Tips

    • The park offers a family combo package with pick-up and drop-off in Mumbai, as well as food coupons.
    • If you are going by train, the park has a very convenient shuttle from the Khopoli train station.

The Nehru Centre has a great exhibit called 'Discovery of India,' which traces the history of India from prehistoric to modern times. The Natural History section at the CSMVS is very interesting for children, with nicely labelled displays of Indian animal, bird, and marine life. Apart from this, there are also interactive kiosks in many of the exhibits — designed to delight both children and adults. The Indus Valley exhibit is a particularly interesting way for children to learn about this ancient civilization.

Everyone loves Marine Drive, with its breezes and waves. Kids are usually interested in the tetrapods, and you can show them crabs scrambling among the rocks. It’s great fun to walk on the ‘katta’ (a low stone embankment), or just hang around munching bhel (a savory street food snack).
