If you're thinking about visiting Las Vegas for the first time, don't book too quickly. Start by reading this. First, arm yourself with a copy of Bob Sehlinger's invaluable "Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas". Available from on-line book-sellers and high street book shops; there's a fresh edition each year . It's undoubtedly the Las Vegas Bible. Everything you could possibly need to know is here - accommodation, restaurants, shows, shopping and lots, lots more. Then, enrol for free LVA gold membership at www.lasvegasadvisor.com This will give you weekly accommodation deals, discounted shows and generally what's happening in Vegas right now. It's edited by Las Vegas expert Anthony Curtis who passes his knowledge on free of charge. With hotels from $20 upwards, it's just crazy to pay rack rates to a travel agent or tour operator when you can get some of the top resorts at amazing discounts here. The best accommodation is on or close to the "Strip" (Las Vegas Boulevard). This is four miles of "resorts" - hotels containing up to 7000 rooms. Each is a small city in itself. Most are extravagantly themed with 24 hour gambling and an everlasting party atmosphere. And now, ten top tips for Sin City first-timers...

MikeArran's City Tips

  • Some shops offer great value. However lots are "designer" expensive. Others offer only tacky souvenirs. Head to the outlet malls for great value clothes, luggage cosmetics etc.
  • There are no banks or major supermarkets on the Strip. You can change money everywhere, of course, but at a hefty commission. Food shops are limited to the likes of Walgreens.
  • Need to cool off? Thirty hotel pools open to the public (for a fee). A dozen are "European" (topless). Party hard and even gamble poolside at the Tropicana, Caesar's or Hard Rock.
  • Hit the high spots - the 1150 feet Stratosphere Tower. Try the "sky Jump" for the quick way down! The Linq's "High Roller" 500 ft big wheel or a 10 minute $100 helicopter ride.
  • Down-town "Fremont Street" is the original Las Vegas with a crazy atmosphere and plenty of free stuff. My advice would be don't stray from the main area and travel there by taxi.
  • Traffic is horrendous. It's sometimes quicker to walk than take a bus or taxi! And Vegas is not pedestrian friendly. Cross the strip at traffic lights or use the over-bridges.
  • Free fun is often available - the Bellagio fountains and floral displays, Mirage volcano, Treasure Island pirate battles, canals (but not gondolas!) at the Venetian to name a few.
  • If you want to hire a car, do it from your hotel. The airport rent a car centre is some miles off airport and involves taking a shuttle. Adds an hour or more to your journey.
  • If you're arriving internationally, immigration at McCarran International Airport is diabolical. Be prepared for an extremely long queue and waits of up to an hour.
  • When booking your accommodation watch out for the addition of "resort fees". They have developed extensively in recent years and are simply a sneaky way to bump up your bill.

Amazing views from this up-market revolving restaurant at the top of the Stratosphere Tower. Book for just before dusk and ask for a window seat. Watch out for bungee jumpers going past the window!
