rcote75's City Tips

  • Go hear some live local music. You will love it!
  • Staying in the French Quarter is great but venture outside of it. There is much more to New Orleans than Bourbon Street.
  • Eat what is in season! Shrimp, oysters, soft shell crabs, crawfish...if they are fresh and in season EAT THEM!
  • If there is someone outside a restaurant with a menu or a sample dish covered in plastic, and trying to get you to go in and sit for a meal....keep walking. Any place worth going to doesn't do that.
  • Tip! New Orleans is a service industry city and we tip our service industry folks very well. One of them may be your next best friend.
  • You can easily purchase a three day bus ticket if you desire. I recommend against renting a car as traffic can be horrible, people drive terribly and parking can get expensive.

Commander's Palace is one of the top restaurants in the world. If you enjoy going out to eat and consider yourself even a little bit of a foodie, you wont want to miss this experience. I recommend going for dinner but if you are a fancy Sunday Jazz Brunch kind of person, that is very fun too. The food is fantastic and the service is out of this work. Make a reservation as soon as you know you will be in town!!

    • Foodie
    • Couples
    Tips
    • Dress up! Put on that pretty dress you've been dying to wear and dry clean your man's sport coat because this place calls for it all!
    • Ask your server for a tour of the place. S/he will bring you through the wine room and the garden room and through the kitchen where you can snap a picture with the chef!
    • If you really want to do it up, ask for the Chef's table. A table of 4 (only 4, always 4) in the kitchen. You'll be delighted with many many courses and optional wine pairings. This is a hard reservation to get!

If you are in New Orleans I hope you are there to eat! And eat well. Learning the history and how we cook is as fun as the food itself. At Langois you get all of that! You can sign up for a lunch or brunch class, a dinner or cocktail class, or do it all! It is not inexpensive but it is worth every penny. The classes are designed to teach you an entire menu and you have the option to help prep/cook as well...or you can sit back and sip wine while taking notes or just watching the show.

Venture uptown to this local's spot for dinner one night. Make a reservation because the place is small and popular in it's neighborhood. It sits on the outskirt of the Irish Channel which is also home to many great bars and shopping along Magazine Street. A perfect day would be to take the bus uptown out of the French Quarter and spend the day walking Magazine Street shopping and eating/drinking. Ending with dinner at Atchafalaya and grabbing a cab back to the hotel or further up to Tipitina's for some music. I'd tell you what to order here but EVERYTHING is amazing. It's also a great place for brunch.

Galatroire's is one of the very few reasons I go to Bourbon Street...this old school grande dame restaurant is absolutely festive and wonderful. Dress properly please! The fish/soft shell crab dishes here are amazing but so are the veal and lamb chops and the steaks. Get the oysters en brochette, try the oysters Rockefeller, try it all! The best thing to do is put your menu away, order cocktails and let the server bring you the best of the best from the kitchen.
