New Orleans on a budget

You can still enjoy everything that New Orleans has to offer without spending a lot of money. Of course, if you want to spend money, that's OK, too, but this guide is more for those who like adventure, but are still "thrifty."

ovolacto's City Tips

  • 4). As any traveler should know, leave your jewelry and fine clothes at home when exploring the city. Do not make yourself a target New Orleans is one of the top cities when it comes to murder, and, even though there are a lot of really nice, friendly people living here, there are quite a few desperate people, too.
  • 3). Public Transportation is "hit or miss." Do not count on the Streetcars to be on time. They can be hours late. They are fun, and a New Orleans "must do," but they are not reliable. The busses are much better, and they'll take you just about anywhere around town for $2.00. Also, as with any bus in any city, know that you may be watching by unsavory characters. There are people in this town who will seriously hurt you just for your cell phone.
  • 2) You can save a lot of money when staying in a hotel if you just go a couple of blocks South into the Central Business District. Hotels are cheaper, restaurants are cheaper, and you are still easy walking distance from Bourbon Street.
  • 1) Don't stray too far off the beaten path, especially alone. Just one or two blocks too far in any direction can put you into a dangerous situation. It is best to stay in groups, travel with groups, and, most of all, to travel during the day. At night, stay in the French Quarter where it is well lit, and well-patrolled

The green ones are the oldest. They are tight, uncomfortable, and unreliable. Nonetheless, they are still fun and historic. Just do not count on them for transportation if you are on a tight schedule

This is the heart of the French Quarter. You'll find the Square surrounded by musicians, artists, and performers as well as history, architecture, and dining. Cafe du Monde is right across the street.

During the day, Bourbon Street is pretty ordinary, but, as soon as the Sun goes down, they block off the streets, and the party begins. It can get pretty risque on Bourbon Street, so don't bring the kids, (even though some do), and be ready to see just about anything.

Located over in the French Market, this is one of the beat places in the Vieux Carre for organic, vegetarian and vegan food. The prices are reasonable, and the food is excellent. You can come to New Orleans, and not compromise your healthy diet.

There is a lot of really good pizza in New Orleans, and this may be the best. It's only made in individual sizes, but they are big for personal pizzas, and really, really good. The pizzas are hand tossed, hand made, and cooked in a wood-fired oven. It's also a cutre little restaurant, too

    Tips
    • The bathrooms are tragic. You have to go through the kitchen to get to this tiny, dirty bathroom. Your best bet is to go before you come, or to save it for another time.
