Onar is a little private village in an exceptional place. It provides access to a great plane tree forest with a river, a beautiful and quiet beach (great to dive and swim) and a 15 km hiking path among the mountains which leads to the Monastery of Saint-Nicholas (4.2 km) and ultimately to the lovely city of Choras.
You have access to the hotel by a 4-5 km of dirty road so the hotel is quite isolated as this area of Andros is extremely wild. The trip from Athens (via Rafina) takes around 3-4 hours.
My small 1-room house was very nice with a beautiful partial view on the sea (on the high portion of the hotel). There was a small pool for guests just above with an outstanding view and also a pool house (closed when I was there).
There is just one restaurant but the food is simple and good and the staff is very kind and friendly even if the management seems a bit improvised sometimes
I would recommend the hotel for families or couples looking for a quiet and beautiful place.
maybe the most unprofessional hotel ever seen. At first they don't have a reception, a wifi, the breakfast was awful. You have to pay 300euro for a a double room and during the breakfast you pay for your own coffee 3,5E!!!!!!
Without a jeep it is extremely difficult to reach the hotel (and if you need a lift 60E per p e r s o n for one way!!!!). The 'hotel' is 1,5 hour far from the town, so you have to eat all the time in there.. with bees on your food and SUPER expensive meals they offer you.
We stayed for six nights in August with two small kids (2&4).
We loved our stay here. The location is amazing. Very remote, a 25 min very steep drive down a dirt track. It‘s in a valley with beautiful plane trees and a small creek that runs through it. The houses are simple stone houses with large terraces and comfy loungers set in the valley. There are also some houses in the hillside if you want a pool and / or a sea view from your room.
It is very kids friendly and most of the other guests were families. Probably best for age 3 to 10. There is a small playground next to the restaurant, but the kids more than anything loved the surrounding nature and all the space to run around in. Finding beetles and praying mantis, picking stones and sticks etc.
The beach is beautiful but not serviced. Very little shade and no sun loungers. The pool is a natural pool next to a small waterfall a 5 to 10 min walk from the hotel. If a pool is important to you then take a pool villa.
The food was very good, but can get a bit repetitiv after staying for more than 5 nights.
The hotel is family owned and you can feel the personal nature of it. Most other guests were repeat guests, which speaks for itself. All in all, I would say it feels a bit like a Six Senses property (which we love), with a little less service and a little more authenticity. We will return!
We stayed at Onar for a week in July. From the moment we stepped off the boat at Andros, the staff at Onar treated us like their own family. The drive to Onar was adventurous through the lush landscape of Andros and the dirt roads that finally led to the paradise called Onar. We stayed in the 1 bedroom Cottage and were very happy with all the amenities provided. The restaurant food was amazing. The chef went out of his way to cook us special meals. It felt like we were at our family house where they cook us whatever we want. Teo also made sure our son had all the beach toys he wanted and remembered the little things which made our stay extra special. In the evenings, our son loved picking vegetables in the garden for dinner with the other children who were staying at Onar. The staff also played movies for children on the big screen in the evenings which kept them very happy! We also met some amazing families with whom we instantly bonded. The best part is that it didn't feel like a hotel. It felt very personal and that's what makes Onar so special. We will definitely go back to Onar.
I stayed with a large group of friends at Onar for a few days last week. It's a true gem under all aspects, our room and home was superlative, accommodation, the beach is a true gem and really pristine, the food was lovely and the nature untouched. The owner and everybody there did everything they could to accommodate our requests and make our stay truly memorable - highly recommended!
