On arrival a drink was served in the garden, that's what I call a welcome!
We got a large room overlooking the grounds, fantastic.
Since we booked for 4 nights we wanted to have our dog in the room for a couple of hours during the daytime. That was impossible because our dog could not walk on the slippery (slippery only for dogs!) surface leading up to the room. No problem, we got an appartment with a seperate entrance at the back and we were happy and so was our dog (Italian Spinone, too big to carry).
The whole setting is very peaceful and quiet, exactly what we were looking for.
The town of Spa is nearby (wonderful springs, powerful water) and you can do a daytrip to Aachen (Charlesmagne, Aachener Printen)
Breakfast was the best ever !!! Go and experience it yourself !!!
We were really sad to leave and will definetly come back.
Thank you for a wonderful stay !!!
The other reviews for Chateau De Hodbomont are right on the mark. Booking and advice from Anke went very smoothly and efficiently, with her being fluent in many languages. We booked two accommodations, a two bedroom apartment for my wife and I, and our son. We also booked a room for our friends from Paris.
Our arrival welcome was very warm and relaxing, including complimentary drinks and a tour of the beautiful and peaceful chateau. The owners have done a remarkable job of restoring the chateau to its original charm and beauty.
The accommodations were very clean and comfortable, and included very easy to use wood burning fire places.
Anke provided the perfect restaurant and sight seeing recommendations for our group, including a tip to visit an historic private brewery in a neighboring village. Evenings were very pleasant visiting with other travelers staying there, with Anke and Herbert and their beautiful and well trained canine companions also joining in.
Breakfast at the chateau was outstanding, with a delicious variety of courses presented perfectly in a relaxing environment.
There is no regular public transportation in the Hodbomont area so automobile transportation is recommended. There is convenient rail service to the general area at Verviers and Theux. Once at the Chateau there are many towns and villages of different sizes worth visiting, by car and also by foot. We were without car transportation on our last two days and were able to take advantage of the many trails that connect villages in the area.
Anke and Herbert are so kind and accommodating, and they made sure that we made our train connection upon leaving.
Absolutely wonderful! A friend recommended the Chateau and its Tower Room - the only one with a bathtub. And what a bathtub! But that was just a bonus. The experience begins with a warm welcome from Anke and the two gorgeous Gordon setters, and only gets better. Everything is provided for maximum comfort; one feels totally looked after and thoroughly spoiled. Breakfast is delicious (try to eat in the room with the fireplace!) and leisurely. The people who live in the gatehouse serve dinner exclusively for guests of the Chateau, so it's just a short stroll down the lane to an excellent meal with free-flowing wine... We took a long walk on the Saturday, with map and advice provided by Anke (who also sang Happy Birthday to me in German!), and even in the rain we enjoyed the gently rolling countryside. Anke says they get a lot of return guests, and you can see why! It's an enchanting place.
We have to agree with all of the previous reviews. Truly wonderful place, the main building of which was built in 1764 (you can imagine the Count and Countess, the original owners, gliding through the grand rooms in their powdered wigs and finery). Lots of atmosphere and a warm welcome was had from the charming proprietors and their friendly cats and dogs (two of each). It was also a treat to return to the chateau one evening to the enchanting strains of classical guitarists playing in the drawing room. Another evening we enjoyed a bottle of Bordeaux by the roaring fire - and were joined by Robert the cat who appreciates a warm lap! Our room was very attractive too and peppered with well chosen antiques. The continental breakfasts were of the highest quality, and splendidly presented in gorgeous crockery and glassware. A very memorable stay. We were so impressed, we even purchased an elegant antique art nouveau dish before we departed. Very highly recommended.
What can I say? A real chateau set in a huge beautiful park. The owners deal in antique so the place is full with first class antique furniture and carpets. My room was huge with three bay windows overlooking the park and with beautiful art nouveau furnishing. A well equipped and bright bathroom with all you might need. A sumptuous breakfast by the fireside served by the very helpful owner. All this for a more than reasonable price. The only caveat I can think of is to pay good heed to the arrival instructions provided by the hosts, for the place is not easy to find, not even with GPS.
