I stayed at Funky Monkey per friend recommendation. This was my first hostel stay and I loved every minute of it. I planned on staying at the hostel for two days and ended up extending my stay to an entire week.
The hostel is huge equipped with a full living room, kitchen, outdoor area, pool with a waterfall, huge rooftop with another dining area, hammock, an upper level to catch the sunset, bbq and outdoor oven. Rooms are spacious and have their own bathrooms.
The owner is friendly, down to earth, and just a really cool dude and he puts together group activities if you’re interested. I would recommend this hostel to any travelers looking to meet fellow awesome people or even if you need a quiet spot to crash at, it’s large enough to accommodate anyones needs (if you’re awesome). Also, it’s walking distance or a short ride from anything you desire.
Thank you for the experience & memories!
Loved being here in low season. Beach, pool, dorm to myself and restaurants open unlike home!
Best part was the other travelers who didn’t give a f*** about what’s happening in the world and stayed in Mexico. First class peeps.
Elisa, the manager is a super cool chick.
Breakfast was free and decent. Everything within a 15 min walk. Try Ferrol’s down the street for the most delicious homemade (and cheap) Mexican everyday.
This is a place, which deserves 110% the term hostel! The staff and volunteers were super friendly and welcomed me with an open heart and beer! 😍 Beds, bathrooms, the two kitchen and pool were perfectly clean!! Very big community area and a wonderful roof terrace makes it easy to get in touch with the other guests! They do activities like yoga, cooking and parties! Everywhere are stunning paintings and a safe place to park my motorcycle makes this place one of my favorite hostel! Everybody who likes to party and tell/listen to stories from all over the world should come to Mazatlan and stay at the Funky Monkey Hostel! 🤪😘
Based in the zone dorada, Funky Monkey is about 10mins walk from the beach. It is a very friendly place and all the staff there couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly during our stay. The guys who were working over the summer worked really hard and were always around to help with laundry, questions about the town etc.
The night we arrived they were having a BBQ up on the communal rooftop (where everyone drinks and hangs out at night to avoid noise in the dorms/pool area) and, as we arrived pretty late and didn’t want to walk to the beach area, the owner kindly offered us a couple of the best burgers we have ever eaten. You can bring your own beer and our private room had a fridge to keep it cold. AC was good and included with our private room that was located right next to the pool.
Pool area is nice and relaxing during the day and the breakfasts we had were included with the rate and tasty. They rotate between fruit, eggs and pancakes which all come with coffee.
Wifi was poor in our room and we had to use data but worked well in the communal kitchen/living room area.
To get to the old town/the cliffdivers or the lighthouse (el faro) you can walk to the main road (Camaron Sabalo) that runs parallel along the malecon and take a bus or get an Uber/Didi for 50-80$ direct from the hostel.
There is a really nice smoothie/healthy breakfast place close by that I can recommend, it’s called Tierra Bendita.
This hostel is top knotch with extremely friendly and helpful staff. The place is exceptionally clean and has an at home feel. With many books, fully stocked kitchen and comfortable living area you will feel right at home. Added bonus of a swimming pool to chill at and read a book while doing your laundry a couple steps away. Highly recommend this hostel to anyone on a backpacking adventure, weekend getaway or just a change of scenery.
