First off, we had pretty high expectations for the resort. We stayed at a Secrets in 2017 and loved every minute of it. They highly recommended that we take our Kids to a Sunscape where they will get the red carpet treatment. The bar was set pretty high.
Here is a list of Pros and Cons. Below is the details of our trip if interested in a longer version.
Entertainment was the best part of the resort, that staff was friendly and helpful.
Resort was clean
Food was good but you have to live outside your comfort level a bit and try new things especially with the buffet.
Most staff was friendly.
Beach was beautiful
Overly crowded on weekends.
Bathrooms were tiny
Hardly any drawer space or hangers
Restricted hours on Kids Club and Water Park (closed some days) which were not advertised
Seaside Restaurant was closed
Same food served daily and when you have 1 place for breakfast, 2 for lunch, and 3 for dinner, gets a bit old
Hard to get a pool lounger

We were immediately hounded by the “sales” people to get us to travel to the Now resort. I didn’t want to go, I know they’re going to try and get us to buy into the AMResorts Timeshare thing. No way, no thanks. Man they are persistent and it’s hard to get away from them. After the hour long conversation, they directed us to the Barefoot Bar & Grill. Well, they would not serve us, you have to have a waiter. They had 3 waiters running around covering all of the pool area so we opted to the lunch buffet. It was OK. I am not a picky eater. I eat about anything and willing to try new things. Room was ready after lunch. We got the bunk bed room for the kids, it’s on the 1st floor. The bathroom was TINY. Hardly any drawers and hangers but overall, the room was nice overall though. The kids never got a red carpet anywhere.
We changed and headed out to the pool and water park. Even though all advertisement says the water park is open from 9a to 10p online, it was only open from 12 to 4… most days. It was not open on Tuesday and Thursday during out week stay. That was a HUGE disappointment as that was the biggest selling point for this particular resort. Not only was it not open as expected, they would kick my kids out if I was not standing over there supervising them (they’re 9 and 7 and are very capable of going up stairs and going down a slide). Kids Club was also only open from 11:30 to 5p and only allowed 10 kids, again, another big disappointment. My wife and I wanted 1 night of dinner just the 2 of us. Samantha in Kids club though was great with our Kids.
1st night we had Tiki Taco (the Italian and Buffet was the only other options and we’re not buffet people). The food was pretty good, however, it is kind of a buffet. The 2nd night was supposed to be a BBQ cookout but that was cancelled for some reason. Instead, we had Italian (again, only Tiki Taco and Buffet were open). I asked on the 3rd day about the Seaside and it’s closed due to covid. That would have been nice to know that our dining options were limited to 3 locations (we had 7 at Secrets). They did serve the Seaside Menu 1 time at the Italian restaurant. Seaside and Italian were both pretty good. We liked it the most. We would have had Italian again on the last night but it was closed completely so back to the Tiki Taco. The Barefoot Grill was a bit confusing. The first 3 days required a waiter, the rest of the week you had to go get the food yourself. The breakfast buffet was fine. We enjoyed it. They had a lot of the same stuff but would have some different dishes each day for some authentic Mexican stuff. They did serve every dish so there was quite the line if you went during peak hours.
Entertainment was good. Alcatraz and David were our favorite in the group. They did their best to make the days enjoyable. I thought this team was the best part of the resort.
The Bars were fine, Manuel and Omar I thought were the best and took care of us.
Roger at Concierge helped us out a few times with things.
The last bit of “problems” I felt I had was it was packed on Friday through Monday with locals. There were long lines for everything, food, drinks, …. even hard to find seats for the entertainment. Sometimes I felt a few bartenders would skip us to get the local folks a drink. On Saturday night the locals were up till well after 3 and very loud. We were on the 1st floor near the elevator so we heard it all. Kids screaming and everything. Also, each day, all pool loungers were taken by 11am. Towels thrown on them but no one around so it was hard to get 2 next to each other to lay out a bit. If you arrive at 3, forget about checking in, the line for the locals were out the door. Highly recommend getting there as early as possible or after 5.
I think we were pretty spoiled going to Secrets 1st and if we had went here 1st, we would have been just happy. But since we know what AM Resorts can do, it was a slight let down. I also would like to think/hope that before covid it was a bit more pleasant and maybe the kids would have gotten the red carpet treatment, water park and kids clubs fully open, and all restaurants open and as they should be.
We checked in on May 24, 2021 it was so loud from the band playing right by check in, we couldn’t hear anything thing we were being told. The only food that was decent was at Tiki Taco. Breakfast all food was served cold eggs, pancakes, waffles were hard as a rock. Ham was served first day we were there but that was the only day. They do not serve lunch til 1pm. It was all cold. Hot dog and hamburger buns served by pool were hard. Alcohol was watered down, even if you got doubles it was like drinking koolaid. Pool was good, pool towels smelled moldy. Pool chairs were reserved first thing in morning with peoples stuff in them yet no one showed up for hours later to use them. Will not ever stay at this resort again. It’s like bottom of the barrel resort.
Where to start! Horrible food we are not picky eaters but the food is disgusting and repetitive. Cheap food. No sea food. Slow and under staffed restaurant. Sometimes didn’t get my drink. No food choices the food made us sick. We had to eat at restaurants outside the hotel. Rodolfo is pushy and he spied on us even though we explained to him we called an Uber not interested in timeshare talks. We felt we were always being interrogated and spied on by the timeshare team always asking where we were going made us feel unsafe. The pool closes at 7 pm and the towel service ends at 5pm. The rooms are old and moldy. I regret not staying next door at Villa Del Palmar. There are way better choices in PV. They follow no Covid protocols and the hotel was at full capacity. Never going back here! Luckily we were out and about so much that it didn’t ruin our vacation. PV was beautiful we will be back just not to this dump of a “resort”! Carmen at the front desk is very nice and helpful so was Yanitza. The views are very nice that’s the only thing this place has going for it’s self. They also didn’t honor the 4 for 4 package I bought. Don’t stay here people research other resorts the beach here is muddy and full of rocks. We had to walk to Fiesta Americana for a nicer beach. This place was not worth my money.
We visited Sunscape Puerto Vallarta in December for Christmas and we made it a point to come back for our spring break vacation. Needless to say, they exceeded our expectations once again.
They are still following COVID protocols once you arrive. Before the security lets you in the gate, they check everyone’s temperature. When you get off the taxi, they give you hand sanitizer and greet you with agua fresca (we got refreshing agua de Jamaica). They offer COVID testing (make sure you make an appointment for that before your departure) and explain it at the reception when you are checking in.
Everyone made our stay extra special.
At the Explorers Club, Jasmin and Dayana were amazing and were happy to see our boys back. They greeted and received them with such joy, which makes me feel happy and gives me a sense of security when I leave my boys with them. My boys’ favorite activities were the Easter egg hunt, the Pirate treasure hunt and the crafts they made (keychains, bracelets and pencil holder). Both ladies are extremely talented at their job and I can see that they enjoy what they do.
World Café during breakfast: Kristian Sanchez remembered us from our visit in December and welcomed us back. He was very attentive and memorized our morning beverages (we were a group of 9!). Elmer also was our waiter and brought us yummy toast and bacon every day. Chef Luis Maciel’s food was always delicious. The ladies making omelettes to order were quick at taking orders.
We were happy to see that the pool bar was open again. Our pool and beach waiters were beyond phenomenal. Francisco, Miguel, Jose Luis, Rogelio, Eduardo and Alex were always coming and checking if we needed refills which we appreciated.
Lupita at the Barefoot Grill is happy to serve all the hungry guests. The hamburgers, hot dogs and nachos were our go-to everyday at lunchtime since we spent all of our day at the pool or the beach.
Ana and Jovita at the Coco Café are great at making different types coffees, teas and hot cocoa. The pastries there are my favorite. They also have petite sandwiches.
Dinner restaurants: Rosendo also remembered us from our previous visit and would always greet us whenever he saw us even if it was from afar.
NOE was amazing last time and was amazing this time. When he saw us our first night there (at the Tiki Taco) he greeted us with a beautiful desert plate (see photo). He made sure we were always satisfied with our meals (he was at Da Mario, Tiki Taco and World Cafe different nights). He brought us the best pizza we have ever had south of the border (see pictures). Cirilo was also great.
Entertainment: There were various night time shows (Magic Show, Urban Show, Light and Fire, Karaoke, Live Music) Mario Olvera was the one setting up for all of the shows (and sets up a movie at the Lobby bar area every night) and was there making sure the light and sound were working properly. Thanks to him we got to enjoy all the shows. Fabian is super friendly and made our stay even more fun. My husband enjoyed playing water volleyball as well as music and movie trivia.
Our housekeeper Elizabeth always kept our room clean and tidy. In the evenings, another house keeper would come to change our towels if needed and close our curtains so when we got to our room at night we could just lay in our bed.
This resort is great for families. There’s a water park which is for children only and my boys enjoyed very much. I highly recommend anyone to come and stay at Sunscape Puerto Vallarta. We are planning to return at the end of this year
