Basic place with basic room and basic customer care.
The room was very basic with a patio door that didn't close properly and only half of a pair of net curtains so the mosquito's were in abundance. To top it all without good security in the room, there was no room safe.
No hot water in the afternoon, but it had returned the following morning.
There were a few beds by the pool but not enough for the size of the hotel.
We had breakfast elsewhere as apparently they don't serve breakfast.
I stayed here as part of a tour, so the hotel was not my choice.
From the outside it looks quite smart, but that ends at the front door. The reception area is a bit grubby looking, and the room was a disappointment.
Good bits- the bed was very comfortable and the linens are excellent. Nice outdoor seating area.
Bad bits- the unit that the fridge was in was virtually rotten, the walls were grimy, the frame of the patio door was loose in the wall, there was peeling paint and cracked tiles in the bathroom, the shower shelf was coming away from the wall, the whole place needed decorating. None of this would take much fixing, so why don't they do it? There is a notice in reception saying they are doing renovations so there was no where for us to have breakfast and we had to go to a cafe down the road. Not sure why a tour operator would use this hotel at the moment.
I went to stay at Koh Kong Bay Hotel for three nights and had two rooms rented for my stay. Upon arrival we were given keys to the rooms and asked (as it states on the website and if you call in) if they could help set us up for any tours of the region or a hike or whatever the region has to offer. They could not. They didn't have anywhere to send us, we were on our own to find places to go and places to discover. As we made our way to the rooms:
Room #1's patio door wouldn't close.
Room #2's air conditioner wasn't functioning.
The staff were good and promptly gave us new rooms. The photos/video on the website, I can't emphasize enough are completely ridiculous. Not even close to accurate. The building is in complete disrepair and the video must have been done when the building was brand new (20ish, 30ish years ago?) or photo shopped by an absolute professional. On top of this, pictures don't pick up smell and illumination in the rooms. The smell that came from the drain in the bathroom, and the water, was something that you had to get used to. The lighting in the room is so horrible you can barely see anything in certain area's and in others overwhelmingly bright with the pot lights that exist in the ceiling. There are no bed lights, so if you want to go to bed you have to get up and turn the lights off at the front door.
On top of everything else there is construction. Every single day we all literally had a construction worker on our balcony. Step out of the shower, there's the construction worker on the balcony. Wake up from sleep, construction worker. All day there were construction workers on our unusable balcony. Not only inconvenient but creepy to constantly have a peeping Tom at your window.
So what was positive?
The staff are very pleasant, as are most Khmer. The bed was actually comfortable to sleep in. The shower had hot water (which in Cambodia isn't a sure thing). The room, for the most part, was clean. Found a few area's that weren't the cleanest and a couple towels that had stains, but overall manageable on the cleanliness side.
So. Would I recommend this property to someone? No. But after talking to many of the locals this is one of the best options in Koh Kong, so tough to say if there is another better option. They all seem bad.
The views are great and the pool is nice (something most other accommodation options here don't have). The room was ok but at this price I expect hot water which didn't always happen. Tried to have the included breakfast but after sitting in the restaurant for 20 minutes being ignored I gave up on it. The staff weren't particularly helpful - starting from not having enough change ($6) when getting me to pay upfront through to a simple checkout that took over 15 minutes. Overall not the level of service and facilities that I expect at this price point in Cambodia.
Great view over the creek. Basic but OK rooms. But - the aircon is hopeless, the same for my colleague's room next door. Room remained hot all night. The pillows are among the most uncomfortable I have encountered - great mounds of unyielding foam which overheat your head and are impossible to rest on. I had to throw all four on the floor and use a rolled-up towel. Hardly slept. The hotel is cleaned badly too. For the price we paid, this hotel was terrible value. It would have been poor value at half the price. The internet was good.
