Annual group walking holiday for 45 people. All the staff were excellent & we had a really spacious bedroom in the main house with a splendid view of the lake. The bathroom shower was very weak & extended washing time. The catering was OK but I've had much better breakfasts/dinners at other HF properties. Whilst the accommodation was perfectly all right, there is definitely a problem with the drains here. After 4 nights the smell was getting rancid. Also, car parking for a full house is inadequate. GOOD TIP : There are two outhouses here for extra rooms. Try & avoid as a colleague said the hot water ran out every night ! Therefore book the main house.
Stayed here on a HF walking holiday and had a lovely time . The building is old and the rooms vary in size and quality . I had a double standard room which was spacious and private although I had to pay a supplement for single occupancy . No view to speak of but some of the better rooms have views of the lake . Food was excellent . Dinner is at a set time (7.15pm) and you choose your menu from 3 options in advance ( usually meat , fish and vegetarian ) . You sit at tables of 8 or 9 so sociability is guaranteed . Breakfast is between about 7.45 to 8.45 with most people down early . Decor is a little old fashioned and some refurbishment is required in places . WiFi available in public rooms but was weak to non-existent in the bedroom . Lovely grounds and gardens with walks starting from the door .
Heart of the Lakes location, 5 mins drive north of Coniston village. Walks from the door. In National Trust ownership, the Hall has acres of grounds with a large, walled kitchen garden and lake views from the dining room. Furnishings & decoration in the public rooms are on a Victorian scale. We stayed in The Cottage next to the main house: quiet, toasty warm, modern en-suite, powerful shower. A sauna of a boot room for wet walking gear, boot pegs for every room. Extensive, well-organised walking routes and tourist info. The full-board breakfast, dinner and picnic lunch were very good, with delicious home-made soups, cakes and healthy options. Dining tables for eight, so come prepared to chat with fellow guests. Relaxed air - we were welcome to help ourselves to fresh milk from the pantry. Outstandingly efficient & friendly manager & staff.
HF have a great reputation and this location is no exception. Located above Coniston water, this rather ugly old house is a beautiful setting for walking with Coniston Old Man, Tarn Hous, Brantwood and Coniston Village just a leg stretch away. The view below is from the dining room and was only ‘spoilt’ by a young deer frolicking on the lawn whilst we had dinner.
Rooms are great, food lovely, very welcoming. What more could you want - ah yes, good weather - the only thing that comes for free !
Loved this place, it is a lovely old house within a great setting ...the rooms located in outbuildings around the grounds. Our ensuite twin bedded room was very comfortable and clean. The location is just right ... great views of the lake and Coniston village just a short walk away along a path which runs alongside the main road. The staff were very helpful and friendly, particularly the hotel manager, John who was a charming host and happy to help with any enquiries. I was particularly grateful that they posted out my phone charger to me within a day of me realising I had accidentally left it in the room . We only ate breakfast there but were happy at the choices of the buffet style menu and were impressed to see they provided picnic style lunch bags for those who were venturing out on the walks. We didn't go on the arranged walks or trips but saw plenty of other guests who did, and it was certainly well located for the start of some great walks. I would definitely go again and would recommend to others particularly couples and small groups of friends. Thanks to all the staff for a great stay!
