Phoned before we arrived to confirm everything was ready. Nobody there, except a helpful tenant. Told which room to drop off a couple of bags...no keys. Previous occupant had taken them. No spare ones. (This happens often says tenant.) We leave for York and night out. Return to find door locked no key. Tried to contact owner but nothing. Tenant helps us to position ladder round the front but it is too short. Drag pallet round. Still too short. Find heavy duty garden chair place on pallet, place ladder on chair seat! Both of us hold ladder steady while daughter climbs up leans through small window to open main window..and in!! Owner nowhere in sight. Upon inspection bed sheets have pubic hair on them, bugs and spiders webs are dealt with...Positives...the fridge worked and the bath down the corridor (Communal) was large. Downside no blinds or curtains... great if you enjoy putting on a show! It needs money spent on it urgently but I don't think the owners care...

This place is cheap & quiet but I wouldn't want to spend 2 nights in a row there - no amount of old duvets under the bed-sheet can make an ancient, worn out mattress comfortable; having had a long drive I would really have appreciated a good nights sleep. One hand towel between 2 adults is not enough & no one around to ask for extra or to ask if there was anywhere local to get food, anywhere worth walking to etc. The room wasn't filthy but it wasn't really that clean, the extractor fan in the shower room wasn't working so it didn't smell too good in there & the bed linen smelt like it had been dried indoors on a radiator. A plastic jug of some sorts would have been useful as the sink was too small to allow us to fill the kettle, the socket was too low down to allow us to use the kettle on the side table, we had to boil the kettle on the floor which is not very safe. After trying to charge us when we'd already paid (not intentional but still) the young man in reception told us we'd been upgraded to a better room which makes me wonder what the original was like if we were in one of the better rooms. With 5% more effort this place could be really nice, it felt as though knowing people would probably not return, the owners don't care enough to make the extra effort which is a shame.

Our room had clearly recently been renovated, with a new shower room ceiling. It was clean smelling with comfy beds and the heating kept the room warm all night. We spent two nights and were happy to return in the evening after a busy day in York.

Let me just say at this place you get what you pay for. There were 3 of us that paid 16 pound each so we wern't expecting much but as I said it did the job and was a place to lay our heads after a night out. The room was absolutely freezing and knowing the room was booked could have put the heater on prior to our arrival.
