Rated this a 3, but really it is a 2.5, this is the good and the bad:
Would agree this hotel is hard to find. Also would agree rooms are large and washing machine is a big plus. And would also agree the location is good, close to metro line 2, Chunxi road and shopping.
We stayed for 7 nights here and arrived late (near midnight) for check-in. The location is impossible to find, but thankfully someone mentioned this is near the Rhombus Hotel (Fantasia). Have the taxi drop you off here as it is very close and the Rhombus has a nice large sign you will be able to identify. Facing the Rhombus hotel, but not going in, walk to your left, then turn right and walk down the sidewalk with the street on your left side. You will pass some bamboos, a wowo (convenience store), a store with chinese writing, then some doors with the number 200 next to it and SELF LIFE written above, on the left side of these doors is a 24 hour banking sign. Enter these doors below the SELF LIFE writing, and take the elevators to the 24th floor. Exit elevator, turn right then right again, heading half way down the hall till you find room 2411 (right hand side) with the sign CHENGDU Impression Apart-hotel next to it. The door is locked and closed if you arrive late evening, ring the door bell and someone will answer.
There are a few different "hotels" in this commercial building. All with their own front desk. The one here is definitely the most industrial/bland one we saw. It felt like someone just threw in a desk and said, ok, let's open up a hotel.
During our stay, we found no english spoken and communicating with the front desk and housekeeping was always an adventure. Housekeeping was very inconsistent. They would come at very different times of the day and everyday they would forget to replace something. It became a game for me when I would have to see what I was missing, then go to the front desk to try to ask for what I needed. One day it would be towels, another toilet paper, another soap, etc. Always something different. I do not think sheets were changed once during our 7 night stay. The carpet is disgusting (dirty and off-white), and was not vacuumed once (do not put in a light colored carpet when most of your clients have black hair). Beds are firm. Washing machine is great, there is no dryer so you will have to get creative on where to hang clothes to dry (only 4 hangers in the room, no clothes line in the shower).
The bathroom is not an enclosed room, rather glass enclosed shower and toilet (separately). Some people do not have an issue with this so we decided to give it a try. There are shower curtains on the front of each, but another could have been provided on the side of the toilet as well. If you stay for a long time, this setup does become inconvenient (unless you are staying solo). Water from the shower would also spill over to the toilet side. This hotel mainly caters to Chinese tourists, as such, there was only 1 english channel. Wifi was unreliable and slow.
Our window did not close, it was stuck and we had to listen to the construction happening while we slept (there is a lot of construction going on and they work well into the night, perhaps midnight, and again early each morning).
We have stayed in a lot of hotels, with all different star levels. We are not hard to please or difficult to impress, but some things in a hotel are/should be a given, and clean rooms is one of them regardless of the price point.
NOTE: Use the Rhombus hotel as your destination point when getting a taxi. Find the chinese name and address and show it to the driver. We found this easier than the actual hotel address.
We booked this apartment hotel specifically because of the washing machine in the room - definitely needed after traveling around China for a few weeks. The room was very spacious for China - had a mini kitchen but no cooking elements. Apparently the kitchen is not for cooking. Not a big deal for us, but others may want to know. The bed was comfortable and the linens and towels were clean. The one issue for us was the cleanliness of the bathroom - there was still some hair on the floor in the toilet area and other "things" which we choose to ignore. The shelf in the shower was falling off and the shower itself was still a bit dirty - one rinse over with the shower head and we were good to go. The carpets had a few minor stains as well, but nothing that looked recent. Of note, the bathroom walls are all glass (as is normal in China, it appears) but did have curtains to pull across the glass doors.
Best part about this room was definitely the washing machine. Although there is no dryer (we hung to clothes in various places around the room), the washing machine was nearly brand new and of good quality. You can buy laundry detergent from the front desk staff for 5RMB.
The staff do not speak good English, or possibly no English at all. However they have a translation program on their computer which you both can type into for communication, if necessary. We had no issues with communication, despite the language barrier.
Location is ok - walking distance to Chunxi street (1km). We also walked to Tianfu Square, People's park and The wide/narrow lanes shopping district (about 2-3km one way). Subway is close by. Only two blocks to the river.
One hint - the hotel is hard to find. It is on the 24th floor of a high rise commercial building with no signs out front. Once you get to where you think the building should be, go in the door marked 20o (not 216 as the address shows) and go to the 24th floor, room 2411. The door is near a bank, ginkgos restaurant and a wowo convenience store).
The room is very spacious. Contemporarily decorated. It comes with a small kitchen (cooking is not allowed though) and a washing machine. The room looks bigger than the photos u see here. The bed is very comfortable and clean. It is about 10 mins walk from main shopping area.
The owner is friendly and u may get tips from him for local food.
(Stay in Apr 2011 for 5 nights)
Stayed in Jinguan on March 2012.I was suppose to stay in Buddha Zen, but it was full so decided to stay in Jinguan. Its located in commercial high class office service block. The room is full equip with washing machine, dining table, sink and some basic cooking utensil. Just 5 - 10 minutes walk, have great affordable restaurant which I am missing there food now.
The owner looks young and handsome. He speaks English. Staff at Jinguan are help and attentive in recommending us places to visit. In March was the best time there. slightly cold, but nice to walk around as you an see cherry blossom blossoming. However no restaurant available in Jinguan, but no hassle. Food is everywhere
We had quite a sizeable room - much bigger than expected. Was very grateful for the washing machine after 4weeks travelling. That said, only way to dry it was to hang it all around the room! The management didn't speak much English but were as helpful as they could be. Rooms were cleaned each day but to varying standards. Overall, I would recommend it for the room size, location and modern appearance.
