The 88 Armenian has the ideal location within Georgetown's UNESCO World Heritage Zone - only few steps from all major tourist destinations within the historic centre, at the same time situated in a calmer section of famous Armenian Street.

We were - once more - overwhelmed by the exclusiveness of the luxurious boutique hotel, a pearl of modern interior architecture within a colonial-time edifice. This was due to many reasons: A total of only 6 rooms overall, the individualized and always attentive service Lawrence provided, the extremely high quality of furniture, bathroom equipment and decoration, the lovely Aesop bathroom amenities, the extensive complimentary minibar and snack selection, daily tea time and breakfast delicacies etc.

Also, the room was cleaned thoroughly on a daily base, night-time greetings handed out every evening and daily, very friendly and personal chats with Lawrence made us feel like home.

At times, the street noises became a bit of an obstacle to sleeping due to the lack of noise protection, but the muezzin's prayer calls in the morning somehow even added to the already magical atmosphere.

In general, we came to love the personal touch to all aspects of the accommodation and service in particular. This started off in advance with Suet Chin's proactive restaurant suggestions and presented on site by a generous upgrade due to our Post-COVID return.

Thank you, Lawrence and the entire team of 88 Armenian including Suet Chin, who managed the pre-communication in such lovely ways, for having us experience true luxury!

We stayed one lovely night at this new boutique hotel at the suggestion of the General Manager as this is the sister hotel to Noordin Mews. This chic and urbane hotel in the midst of the historic quarter is a breath of fresh air. With a focus on modern amenities and a more exclusive and western bent, it is an ideal location to discover Georgetown. Even though busy during the day with tourist this lovely spot is quiet and romantic at night. Attention to detail including exclusive amenities, in room tablets, a Nespresso machine, excellent treats and a fantastic morning breakfast made our stay very comfortable. We did not try the bath menu and certainly will at our next visit. However, what sets this place apart is the restaurant on the main floor. It comes equipped with a full bar that includes innovative cocktails using local botanicals and inspired by local flavours it opens up a journey of new culinary exploration. Try the Galangal Gin from the Penangite Eiling Lim’s distillery who is known internationally for her exclusive whisky selections and private bottling. Also specific to this location is the chance to explore chocolates made exclusively for his hotel using cocoa grown in Pahang formed into treats inspired by Nyonya flavours such as Ondeh Ondeh, Pulut Hitam and soy sauce caramel. When it comes to cocktails and chocolate, I’m a bit of a snob with my high expectations but this hotel/bar blew my mind.

The 88 Armenian is an exceptional premise located right in Armenian Street - the heart and soul of the wonderful Georgetown UNESCO World Heritage Zone. It combines history and modern days impressively by putting minimalistically designed and most progressively equipped rooms in a historic building.

The design met our taste perfectly and we enjoyed the shower, the bath tub, the beautiful Aesop amenities and the general decor very much. Also, the complimentary minibar and Nespresso capsules for the coffee machine were reliably refilled every day.

Unfortunately, the lighting system was not all thought-through so the room was illuminated by the light-steering unit and by the aisle light that fell through the gap under the entrance door. This gap also resulted in insufficient sound protection so that everything happening in the aisle could be heard from our bed.

General Manager Kar Ve deserves special mention: Her welcome was exquisite - she asked us for all our preferences in loveliest ways and we received a welcome drink upon checking in. During the entire stay she was up for a sweet chat and had plenty of recommendations for activities all over Penang Islang. She was a true delight!

Nonetheless, we must criticize breakfast services and practices at the 88 Armenian: Booking of breakfast only allows one order from the à-la-carte menu with no buffet existing. Any extra orders are subject to additional charge. This reveals a tendency to save money at the wrong spot. Yes, the Italian design shower was a delight and probably the best rain shower we have ever had, but maybe it would make more sense to spend on the breakfast quality and quantity first. Also, one day the salmon was inedible - it tasted old, which diminished the impression of an otherwise high-quality breakfast. Generally, the atmosphere was awkward because we were alone during breakfast all along for three times.

Staffing seemed a little insufficient at times, present staff members had to work excessive shifts.

Nevertheless, our stay was an outstanding experience and the turn-down service with love for detail was one of the smaller things that truly enhanced our time in Georgetown.

Our stay was made especially delightful due to the excellent hospitality provided by the guest service personnel; Sky. The room and facilities were top notch and they also provided a free bath butler service with Aesop amenities. The food was fantastic too. Highly recommended and we’ll definitely stay here again.
