Lovely big room, good service and location is good too - walking distance to attractions in Georgetown, there is a free bus stop nearby and opposite a very good coffee shop for Indian food. Didn't swim in the pool as it seemed like an odd location. I can't say anything negative about the room or service. One minor point worth noting is that I could hear the traffic from the road in the coner property which woke me each morning but this is easily fixed with earplugs. I would recommend staying here if in Penang.

A boutique hotel developed from a row of shops and cafes. Situated on the outskirts of the historical centre of George Town with most sights within walking distance. Stops for the local buses, the free shuttle bus and Hop-on Hop-off bus (not recommended, too much waiting around) are a few minutes walk away. Rooms were large with A/C and ceiling fan, desk and a lot of seating. Our room (Hutton Range) had two bathrooms, loo and large walk-in shower and the other had a Jacuzzi Bath and wash basin. There was adequate stowage space but limited hanging space. There is a small pool, chairs and tables but only a couple of sun beds. We were on a bed and breakfast tariff and we found the buffet breakfast lacked choice (only two types of sliced fresh fruit), it was pretty basic. In their favour I don't thing there were many people staying that were on that tariff. On our last day the buffet was not laid out and we ordered from a printed card and it was brilliant. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Apart from the disappointing early breakfasts, I couldn't really fault this hotel, a pleasant stay.

We had a slightly schizophrenic experience at Hotel Penaga - on one hand staff were friendly and polite, especially in the restaurant for breakfast, but on the other hand, when things didn't go to plan the staff seemed to fall apart.

When we checked in we realised straight away that the air con unit in our room was broken. We reported it and a maintenance guy came out, fiddled about with it for a few minutes then insisted that it was fixed as standing on a ladder, directly in front of the unit, he could feel the cold air. We agreed to leave it for a while to see if it worked, but it didn't. We were told the hotel was full so they couldn't move rooms. The next day we went out for a bit and came back to be told it had been fixed but it clearly hadn't. Anyway, we had 4 visits from maintenance before the operations manager came down and agreed that it was broken. This was pretty rubbish as we'd spent way too long trying to get someone to admit that it wasn't working. Eventually we moved rooms.

Also, little things were annoyong like asking to borrow an ironing board and to be brought one that didn't stand up as it was broken, then no one collecting it from outside our room for a day despite maintenance and housekeeping coming and going on a number of occasions.

So it isn't anything major that I have gripes about, but the standard of service we got was disappointing. When we checked in we basically got given our card and pointed in the direction of the lifts - no one told us when breakfast was, where the amenities were etc etc.

Other than that, the breakfast is pretty good (banana bread was fantastic), and the spa was great too. The jacuzzi in our room was also good. The hotel decor is mostly really nice apart from some brightly coloured sofas and chairs that don't really go with anything. The pool is only a lap pool and is a bit like being in an aquarium as it is overlooked by the restaurant so open to gawkers.

I probably wouldn't stay here again but it's a perfectly decent hotel provided you don't have any problems when you are there!

Room Tip: Room 302 is quite noisy at weekends with lots of traffic noise from outside. 202 is much quieter...

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and absolutely loved it. The room was very big and comfortable. We even had a jacuzzi in the bathroom. Every morning there was a nice breakfast buffet, with a lot of choices. The location of this place couldn´t be better. Totally recommended!

The staff at the Hotel Penaga greeted us warmly and when we were showed to our rooms we were very pleasantly surprised. Spacious rooms that were a lovely blend of old and new. Bed was very comfortable and the room had everything we needed. The pool was a welcome relief when we got back from walking around the old area. Food was ok and there was entertainment if you needed it. The spa was close and ladies were wonderful. Would stay there again if I went back to Penang
