We had a Hutton room. This was spacious and well furnished with period furniture. Cleanliness was good. Service was good but don’t expect a knowledgeable cocktail waiter! We didn’t try the small pool. We had a very enjoyable 1hr massage which was good value for money. The breakfast just average but adequate for our needs. The centre of Georgetown is just a short walk away so we didn’t eat in the restaurant. We had a superb 2hr tour of the sights in a trishaw - well worth doing as the driver acts as a good guide and ensures that you don’t miss anything. We were able to park the car just outside the front door of the hotel.

We stayed here for 3 nights in September and had a pleasant stay. Hotel staff were friendly and tried to help and the room was large, clean and comfortable.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the old part of Georgetown and there are lots of places to eat and drink nearby.

I had the facial in the spa which was very nice.

The pool is just a dip pool and in the shade, with only 2 loungers.

In summary, somewhere clean and safe to rest in what is a pretty dirty city!

I have stayed there with my partner and our parents for five nights. We had two rooms with balcony and one suite as they were fully booked. We have decided to stay at Penaga Hotel as it is one of the rare heritage boutique hotels in the centre of Georgetown with a pool and a garden. Each room is furnished very nicely and quite individually. I liked the mix of old and new art in the rooms and the sense for matching those. I also cannot complain about the service. The staff at the reception was always trying to help and responded almost immediately to our requests. I felt that the staff was quite overwhelmed as the hotel was fully booked.

It could be a very good hotel but there are some spoilers. First of all many rooms are facing Jalan Hutton or Jalan Transfer. Both have a lot of traffic day and night. If you are noise-sensitive you have to request for a room with garden view. My father in law had to sleep on the sofa as he could not stand the noise in the bedroom. The breakfast was another disappointment to me. Those kind of selection you can find in every average business hotel nowadays. It was a selection of average English breakfast items accompanied with two East Asian breakfast items. There was nothing special about it and a clearly saving-money-buffet. Additionally it took always some time until items got refilled. The service of the roomkeepers was also only average. The whole time we have stayed there our balcony was not cleaned once. Sometimes they would not replace towels and our room safe was locked when we wanted to use it for the first time. The pool is small but ok to dip in after a hot day and even for swimming some lanes if there are not more than two people inside the pool. The service on the terrace is a bit weird though. Although there are menues on the table it is hard to catch a waiter or waitress. During the day I have always had to order at the reception. In the evening one poor guy had to stand the whole time at the tables (even if nobody was there for hours) but he was also not very attentive.

Those are all small issues but all summed up it is annoying. Especially for the price of EUR 120/night (we have stayed here during christmas season) those issues should not occur. Sorry, but I have to say it was not value for money this time.

This is a great hotel. The room was very nice, but a larger balcony would have been better. I'm not sure whether there is only one size balcony; it would be worth checking at booking whether this is the case.

The rain shower and spa bath are a welcome relief from the tropical heat.

Staff are friendly and service is good.

The included breakfast was of a high standard.

Loved the lap pool.

Charging RM5 for a 500ml bottle of water was ridiculous, and the staff member who told me the price agreed and was very embarrassed about it. I opted to get five litres from the 7Eleven nearby.

I will stay again.

Saw the high ranking on TA and we booked the room for a weekend. The staff at the front desk are lovely and super friendly. The room is clean and well decorated in antique style. However, the room can be stuffy every time the aircon is off and a couple bathroom items were missing on the arrival and there was some water spilt on the floor. The biggest disappointment was the broken pool throughout our stay as its one of the reason we chose the hotel at the first place.
