We spent two nights at this wonderful home stay. We stayed on the top floor (Artist's room) with a view over the river, loved the dark shutters, the dark timber floor. The hosts were very kind, always on hand to give directions, answer questions, call taxis. Coffee and tea are available on the ground floor which was very much appreciated. Really good location for exploring what's left of the historical heart of Melaka.

Beautiful rooms, very clean and spacious. My family and I had the room at the very front which has a mezzanine floor with 2 single beds, and a huge and seriously comfortable bed downstairs. The location could not be any better, right on the river and close to everything. What really makes this place just that extra bit special are the warm and lovely hosts. Apart from being freindly and chatty and full of useful info they were so incredibly helpful. someone hit our hire car and damaged the number plate, this was noticed by one of our hosts (Frankie) who with Margaret (if I remember correctly is the name of our other host) went about removing, replacing and refitting the number plate after telling us to go about our day and not to worry. I love these guys. And I can't wait to go back to beautiful Mellacca and stay at the Wayfarer again

We stayed for 3 nights in room 6, with a balcony overlooking the river. The room was very clean and spacious and had everything we needed.

Our hostess Lian spoke very good english and was very helpful and friendly.

Perfect location, only a short walk to Chinatown, Jonkers night market, Hard Rock cafe and Dutch area.

Cute authentic cafe about 20 metres from the door of Wayfarers do very cheap breakfast, yummy homemade Kaya butter toast, eggs, milk Kopi ice for 2 people 12RM .

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would have no hesitation recommending that you will have a relaxing stay here.

My traveling companions and I enjoyed a 1-night stay at Wayfarer Guest House. It was a unique experience for all of us as it gave us a glimpse of how life will be like living in a traditional shop house.

Auntie Lian, our host, was extremely helpful and recommended some remarkable treats we can discover within the vicinity of the guesthouse. With her help, we tucked in merrily at the nearby Teo Soon Loong Chan Teochew Restaurant (the highlight of the trip) and the Baboon House (which served some wonderful burgers!)

My fiance and I were in the Room 1 (Author Suite) on level 2, and enjoyed a breathtaking river view. The room was modestly furnished with the basics we required (towels, heated water, air-conditioning, bottled water and comfortable bed), and funnily, we appreciated that there was no television in the room as it allowed us to focus on the beauty around us. For travelers who cannot do without the television, fear not as there is a communal television in the living room at level 1.

Due to the wooden flooring - which is part of the allure of a traditional shophouse - sounds around us were amplified and this may be distracting to light sleepers (thankfully, both of us are pretty sound sleepers, so we were well-rested). Hence, if you are unable to sleep well under thumping footsteps and would also like to steer clear of audible conversations from fellow housemates for the night, I will recommend that you request for rooms on level 3 instead. You can request for Room 6 on level 3 (Artist Suite), which has the same enjoyable river view tagged at the same price.

Overall, we had a pleasant experience at Wayfarer Guest House, and were drawn towards our inviting hosts (Auntie Lian and Uncle Thor) who made our stay in Malacca an extremely memorable one. If you are looking for an authentic and traditional Malaccan way-of-life during your visit, the rustic charm of Wayfarer will most certainly tug upon your heartstrings as you tease the cats (mama cat with 3 cute kittens), which visit the guesthouse in the day. I'm not much of a cat-fan but these strays are really gentle and the family helps to provide them with a shelter under the scorching sun in the day. This guesthouse is indeed filled with a lot of fulfilled dreams and love. :)

I do not understand those who write good reviews.Guests are only accepted until 22:00. So after an already tiring trip, you have to worry about whether or not someone will welcome you at this guest house. We got a room with a window to the kitchen (yes the kitchen). Our rooms was dark, toilet room very small. In the rooms everything can be heard from the outside, and when i say everything i mean even if a coin falls on the floor to an neighbors room, sounds of the kitchen, a quiet chat in the hallway, walking at the coridor EVERYTHING you can hear. There is no elevator so if you if you choose a room on the top floor or have health problems, carrying big backpacks it will not be convenient. House keeping is very poor, even the bed is not made neatly. In the hallways there were a lot of stuff like bedding, toilet paper, used water bottles etc. it does not make a neat picture of a guest house. There arent any receptionist or administrator too. Two kids sitting at the computer playing games you meet more often than adult person wanting to help you. Yes at the ground floor you will find free tea coffee and a box of crackers, but you certainly won't be happy to sit there. The environment was completely messy. You feel like living in a student dormitory. Don't get me wrong, we're not snooty Europeans living only in 5 star hotels, but this guest house is not as magical as it is in the comments. only plus is location.

Response from WayfarerMelaka, Owner at Wayfarer Guest House
Responded 2 Jan 2020
Thank you for writing this review and we appreciate your feedback. The check-in time until 10pm was already known the moment you booked and also informed to you beforehand. However, we do understand that guests may face unfortunate delays coming here and we will always wait for the last guest to arrive. The guest house is a restored 3-storey old shophouse located in the UNESCO heritage area of Melaka. Building regulations here are very strict. We retained as much as possible the original architecture but mixed with modern amenities. There is no elevator here but I did help you to carry your heavy backpack up to the first floor. Sound insulation may be a little poor but this is inherent in this kind of building, though we are planning to improve on this aspect. The guest house is also the home of my family, so we are around doing our own things. We give our guests privacy and space but we are more than happy to assist when requested. The 2 boys you mentioned are my nephews, who were over here visiting their grandparents during their school holidays. We will definitely improve on the tidiness and neatness of the guest house. We are very sorry that you felt this way while staying here. But we definitely appreciate your feedback.
