This was our first time staying at the Amphitheater Backpackers Lodge, and while it was evident that the lodge has had moments of reaching absolute capacity and being very busy - it was quiet. This could be due to the pandemic and the fact that it is winter.
The service was fantastic - we imagine the bar, pool and restaurant area would be amazing during the summer.
The cleanliness and quality of our room was sufficient and acceptable - the quality one would expect from a backpackers.
The value you get for your money is incomparable. The location, the accessibility to walks and hikes, the stars, the view and the quiet is incredible.
The staff are ready to assist with any plans you may have. We decided to do the Tugela Falls hike (which was AMAZING) and the lodge organized transport to the hike, a guide and a packed lunch for us. Our guide was Musi, he was the perfect host. He was patient with our pace during the hike, told us interesting facts about the mountains and his hiking experience, and also gave us privacy to enjoy the views.
I cannot recommend this experience more. We can't wait to go back in the summer.
The owner is super friendly and helpful, the staff are vibrant and add to the lively atmosphere of the backpackers. The bar/restaurant/pool area is absolutely wonderful, was in enthralled with all the different settings you could enjoy in one building.
I have been visiting Amphitheatre Lodge for over a decade. In fact, the first time just happened to fall on the same weekend as the very first Smoking Dragon Festival!
Everytime I visit, something new has been built, renovated or added, to make our stay more enjoyable.
We love the freedom at Amphitheatre. We love that we can show up and pitch our tent undisturbed. We love the welcome and the friendliness.
Amphitheatre Backpackers really should market themselves as a lodge over and above their backpacking accommodation, as it offers much more than what you would normally find at a backpackers.
There's a pool, a hot tub, a sauna. They have darts, table tennis, a pool table, and even a rock climbing wall!
The festive bar and restaurant, adorned with traditional South African artistry is a feast for the eyes.
Amphitheatre Lodge is just 20kms from Royal Natal. It provides the most beautiful panoramic view of the burg, from left to right. Sitting watching the sunset with a pina colada in your hand, is one way to kick back and take it all in.
We understand and appreciate the affect pandemic has had on tourism throughout the world, and are patient with everyone who are still finding their feet again.
We look forward to bringing friends to Amphitheatre in a couple of months time.
Warm welcome, perfect place and nice and cool people to meet. The swimming pool is nice, with an amazing view on the Amphitheatre. Staff people are very nice, and the bar/restaurant are perfect ! I highly recommend this place.
Upon arrival I realized the room had not been cleaned and the floor was dirty. Thick dust everywhere. I found a cleaner to clean our room and all was sorted. The view is beautiful and the evening braai good. The walks are really beautiful. We swam in the pool and used the jacuzzi. Breakfast was ice cold and the avo still green and hard and not edible. The banana smoothie is great and at R58 quite expensive. We always go back and I hope management take time to look at cleanliness of rooms.
