Our family (2 granparents, me and my two girls who are 10 and 12) stayed here for the night between visiting the Roman Palace and Butser Iron Age Village. We arrived about 4pm and were met at the door by Simon the chef who was super-friendly. The bar staff immediately got us a couple of pots of tea and some biscuits for the kids. Revived by the tea we were shown to the terrific rooms in the converted barn. They were roomy, clean, warm , quiet and modern but comfortable - great beds! Pre-dinner drinks in the bar was a lovely prelude to a terrific dinner. The menu has some real gourmet options but also some really great versions of staples. I had an amazing bowl of mussels in a white wine cream sauce. Simon came out to see how we were doing and chatted about the food with us. Dessert was utterly decadent and delicious and Simon had a lovely light elbow when drizzling the baileys over it! When we headed to bed he gave the kids some containers of breadcrumbs for the ducks at the pond for the morning and some extra biscuits to have with their morning tea. We all had a wonderful stay and were really delighted to have found such a gem for just a one-night stay during half term. Go there to eat and don't hesitate to book a room for the night! The rooms are in a detatched barn behind the pub.

We found this quaint little pub by accident, having tried several in the surrounding areas which didn’t do good past 3pm, and we are grateful that we did. From the moment you enter the pub you feel at home the decor is cosy and not overstated and the seats are as comfy as you like.
Choices of wine are excellent and the wine is served in a proper wine glass no measuring lines...!!!
The menu is extensive but not too the point of confusion and all of the food is cooked to order. I had the sirloin steak, and am extremely fussy when it comes to my steak, I usually have to send it back however the chef got it spot on. My husband had the bangers and mash and literally licked the plate clean and my son had the chicken goujons mash and beans the goujons were homemade no frozen stuff here - I even made room for dessert - the apple tart was to die for the pastry literally just melted in my mouth and the portion size was just enough to fill you up.
The service was five star and the staff were super friendly nothing was too much trouble.
For a pub that we stumbled on a accidentally we are so grateful that we did - we will definitely be visiting again very soon.

Just back from 2 nights stay. Room was nice and very clean. Excellent shower. Rooms are to the back of the pub, so away from the road which is quiet anyway. Had the Full English both mornings, very nice and plenty of it. Good selection of ales at the bar. I'm not a pet person, but some people there were, so clearly a dog friendly place. Staff were friendly and attentive. Free parking to the rear of the pub
